Simon Cowell to Undergo Surgery for Broken Back After Falling Off Electric Bike

America’s Got Talent judge and executive producer Simon Cowell underwent surgery for a broken back after falling off an electric bicycle in Malibu on Saturday.

The news was confirmed by Cowell’s spokesperson in a statement.

“Simon had a fall from his bike on Saturday afternoon whilst testing his new electric bike in the courtyard at his house in Malibu with his family,” a spokesperson for Cowell said. “He has broken his back and will be having surgery this evening.”

This marks the second time the 60-year-old has fallen and been taken to the hospital. Cowell was forced to miss the live show of UK singing show The X Factor after falling at his home in London.

Cowell had surgery overnight to repair several broken bones in his back, taking a full five hours. According to PEOPLE Magazine, Cowell was extremely lucky the fall was not worse.

“Simon had surgery overnight and is doing okay this morning. It was a five-hour surgery and he has had to have a number of fusions and metal rod put into his back, a source told the magazine. “He landed on his back when he fell from the bike. The injuries are bad but he’s also been told he was lucky.”

NBC confirmed on Sunday night that Cowell will miss both Tuesday and Wednesday’s live tapings of America’s Got Talent. As of this writing, there is no word on if someone will come in to fill Cowell’s seat while he is on the mend.

America’s Got Talent airs Tuesday and Wednesday’s on NBC.
