‘America’s Got Talent: The Champions’ recap: Which acts advanced in Week 2?

America’s Got Talent: The Champions continued on Monday night with 10 more acts looking to earn a place in the semifinals. The acts featured included mindblowing magic acts, singers, and an out of this world dance crew.

This week, Howie Mandel was given the power of the Golden Buzzer but he didn’t even get a chance to press it. I know you’re probably confused as to why, so let’s just dive into this recap already, shall we?

In case you missed it, here’s a recap of all the acts’ performances as well as the results from the second week of competition.

Marcelito Pomoy

The show started off strong by kicking things off with Pilipinas Got Talent 2011 winner Marcelito Pomoy. He hit the stage for the first time in America and left the audience and judges stunned at what they had just witnessed.

He performed a beautiful rendition of “The Prayer” and what’s so unique about this act is he performed both Celine Dion and Andrea Bocelli’s parts. Yes, he changed his voice and absolutely smashed it. I’ve watched AGT since its premiere and I’ve never seen anything like this before. He was my pick to get the Golden Buzzer and it was the only the first act of the night.

Oz Pearlman

It would be hard to follow Marcelito, but mentalist Oz Pearlman, who finished third on America’s Got Talent in 2015, was up for the task. He returned to “redeem himself” and try to finally win the competition, despite all of the massive success he’s had since his original season.

With the help of judges Alesha Dixon and Heidi Klum, Oz blew everyone’s minds as he used the dates from specific moments in the ladies’ lives and matched it up with a serial number from a dollar bill from the audience picked at random by host Terry Crews. What made it even more freaky is when you flip the numbers upside down, it spells out the word “moment”. Amazing! I’ve been sick and tired of card magic for a while now, so it was pretty cool to see an actual magic act on this show.

Boogie Storm

Things took a weird turn as 2016 Britain’s Got Talent finalist Boogie Storm was next up. The dancing Storm Troopers won Simon Cowell’s Golden Buzzer in 2016 and once again on Britain’s Got Talent: The Champions in 2019. They performed an average routine to a mashup of “Bang Bang” and “Pretty Fly”.

Let’s just be honest here: if the Storm Trooper costumes weren’t on, they’d be a normal and average dance crew. There’s nothing special about them at all. Howie, Alesha, and Heidi all agreed but Simon did not. As the other judges were talking, he reached over and hit the Golden Buzzer himself, sending his favorite act into the finals.

Yes, he basically stole Howie’s Golden Buzzer. I guess you can do that when it’s your show. But not to worry, Howie will still get a chance to make his Golden Buzzer pick later on in the season.

Ben Blaque

Danger act Ben Blaque was next. He originally made it to the Britain’s Got Talent semifinals in 2016 but did not make it after his “Crossbow Roulette” act went wrong and fired two arrows at once at him. He brought Alesha up on stage to redeem himself from the act that went wrong.

And then, things went wrong again. Alesha’s job was to pull the trigger on four of five crossbows aimed right at him. The problems occurred because he forgot to turn the safety off which resulted in the trigger jamming. The judges gave him four red X’s, ending his performance immediately. What a tough way to go out. Maybe it’s a sign he shouldn’t try this trick again?

Collabro

The winners of Britain’s Got Talent 2014 made their American debut as they took to the stage to perform a beautiful rendition of Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper’s “Shallow”. It was definitely a different version of the song and one that I’ve never heard before.

With that said, the performance did not scream anything special to me. It was nice and good, but there was nothing “WOW” about it. It was just pretty average and forgettable.

Ryan Niemiller

If you think you’ve seen this stand up comedian before, you are not mistaken. He appeared on the most recent season of America’s Got Talent that took place last summer, finishing third. He is back again to try and win the whole shebang.

Ryan performed a hilarious set about getting into an accident with a semi-truck and about how others view him because of his disability. While I did find Ryan’s set funny, I am getting a little tired of the disability jokes and want him to focus on other subjects moving forward.

Puddles Pity Party

Now, I normally hate clowns because they’re creepy. But not this clown. Up next was America’s Got Talent 2017 finalist Puddles Pity Party. Following his appearance on the show, he got a residency in Las Vegas but he’s still sad because he did not win the show.

He performed a really good rendition of Foreigner’s “I Want to Know What Love Is”. He has a nice voice but it did not do much for me and I don’t feel it was good enough to win the show.

Marc Spelmann / “X”

The finalist from Britain’s Got Talent 2018 and 2019 made his debut on the American stage and easily put together the best performance of the entire night. He not only did a pretty cool magic trick with cards by guessing Alesha and Heidi’s cards right but he also made Season 13 winner Shin Lim appear out of nowhere.

It was truly one of the most amazing tricks. You just need to watch below. If only Howie had the Golden Buzzer. Right, Simon?

Luke Islam

Even though, singer that always aspired to make it to Broadway saw his dreams come true after his time Season 14 of America’s Got Talent, he returned to AGT for a chance to redeem himself by taking home the top prize and be crowned champion.

This time around, he performed a very nice rendition of Celine Dion’s “Ashes”. While I liked his voice, the song choice wasn’t great, which Simon agreed with. But I bet if Luke was wearing Storm Trooper gear, then he’d like it.

Spencer Horsman

The final act of the night belonged to danger act and America’s Got Talent Season 7 finalist Spencer Horsman. He performed a very dangerous escape trick from a water tank, which was placed over 25 feet in the air.

He escaped but not before some last minute drama; the locks were not unlocking all the way as he was trying to complete the trick. Despite that small error, it was one of my top acts of the night.

The Results

After all the acts performed, Terry returned with the results. He revealed Marcelito Pomoy and Marc Spellman advanced to the semifinals. The judges would vote in Ryan Niemiller to join them along with Simon’s controverisal Golden Buzzer Boogie Storm.

Those four acts join Angelina Jordan, Duo Transcend, Dania Diaz and Hans in the semifinals.
