Summer 2017: Why You Would or Wouldn’t Watch These 7 Blockbuster Franchises

It’s once again summer which means an action and adventure-filled time at the movies. Here are seven franchises new and beloved, reboot and continued, sequel to prequel that will be clamoring for your attention this summer.
Wonder Woman
Release Date: Friday, June 2
Why you would: It’s the first female fronted superhero movie with a potential of becoming a box-office hit. Critics already love it and reviewers are fawning about it.
Why you wouldn’t: There is no reason. Not applicable.
The Mummy (2017)
Release Date: Friday, June 9
Why you would: Science fiction and gadgets and Tom Cruise have been synonymous with blockbusters as of late, so why not?
Why you wouldn’t: How many times must we reboot and how often? Making the mummy a woman sure sounds interesting and then she’s evil.. Pretty sure there’s hoping it will be a complex one…or maybe not. Plus the Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz franchise keeps you pretty loyal.

Cars 3
Release Date: Friday, June 16
Why you would: What happens to Lightning McQueen?!?!??!?!?!?!?! Bonus points for Armie Hammer, Nathan Fillion, Kerry Washington and Lea DeLaria who also voice supporting characters er.. cars and you like hearing your favorite actors’ voices because let’s face it, who doesn’t?
Why you wouldn’t: It’s a cartoon and talking cars are not your cup of tea.
Transformers: The Last Knight
Release Date: Wednesday, June 21
Why you would: The trailer seems promising enough with a young girl as a lead who somehow reminded you of Rey from The Force Awakens. There might be hope for the franchise yet.
Why you wouldn’t: What number Transformers is this already? Plus why does the lead young girl seem to have an accent that almost makes her an almost stereotypical angry Latina trope (heavy sigh)…
Despicable Me 3
Release Date: Friday, June 30
Why you would: It’s the minions. They go to prison. Plus we’ll get to meet Gru’s twin. Innocent summer fun with the youngins.
Why you wouldn’t: So maybe the minions are not so innocent and you’re tired of seeing the yellow blobs talk without every saying anything at all. While I think they’re the cutest, you might prefer SpongeBob, because while he’s a yellow blob, he can actually talk and is fluent in human.
Spider-Man: Homecoming
Release Date: Friday, July 7
Why you would: It’s 2017. It’s time for a new franchise, a new face, new cast, new story, new costume?
Why you wouldn’t: Maybe you’re really thrown off by the news behind Spidey’s new Iron Man-inspired gadget-packed costume instead because after all isn’t being bit by a spider the whole point of Spider-Man (as some fanboys may argue, that is)…Or maybe to you, Toby Maguire is the real Spidey…or maybe even Andrew Garfield….
War for the Planet of the Apes
Release Date: Friday, July 14
Why you would: It’s a franchise you’ve always been dedicated to since the dawn of time. The age-old question of who should win the war between apes and humans after all still, to this day, fascinates you.
Why you wouldn’t: There was Rise, Dawn and now War…apparently there were a few more before that but maybe you’re one whose tastes are partial to the Tim Burton version from 2001 or even the original 1968 one.
