Exclusive Interview with Daphne Willis

Daphne Willis’s newest single “Somebody’s Someone” is full of heart and provides a fresh perspective that is needed in an industry where it is easy to find oneself making music for the sole purpose of fulfilling a quota. Willis is different. She makes music because it is her passion, and she wholeheartedly believes in raising awareness about mental health, and other topics, through song. Thanks to Marabloo Publicity, we were able to talk to Daphne Willis and figure out what makes “Somebody’s Someone” so special and get to know her on a deeper level.
What inspired “Somebody’s Someone”?
I believe mental health is a spectrum. I have been all over that spectrum in my lifetime. The more I talk to others about my experiences with my health and mental health the more I gain knowledge and insight into what is an overwhelmingly common experience. I think knowing that isolation that you can feel when you are depressed or anxious led me to write the song. The song is a reminder to myself and others that we are not alone.
Who, or what made you want to become a professional singer?
I grew up singing. My mom was a vocal major, and we would sing all kinds of different styles and songs for as far back as I can remember. It’s always been my favorite thing to do.
What is something our readers would be surprised to know about you?
I don’t think I’m too full of surprises. My music is pretty reflective and autobiographical, for the most part, and this next record is going to be even more revealing than my previous works. It’s all about vulnerability and growth.
About how long does it typically take you to write a song?
Between two and five hours.
Where do you hope to be professionally in five years’ time?
I definitely want to reach a larger audience. In five years I will, ideally, be touring more than I already am in larger venues, on a global level. I feel so strongly about my message as an artist, and that passion has really lit a fire under my butt. No matter where I am in five years, I’ll be happy if I am making music that is positive and empowering.
Who is someone you would love to collaborate with and why?
Stevie Wonder! Because… he’s Stevie Wonder!
If you could describe the message within your music what would it be?
I always try and embody a positive message of strength and empowerment in my music. I like to listen to music that inspires and uplifts, so that’s what I aim for.
