We got the opportunity to sit down with Dominic Sherwood (Jace) and Matthew Daddario (Alec) at New York Comic-Con and talk about what’s coming up in Season 2 of Shadowhunters. You can tell the bond between these boys extends beyond their character’s parabati role as they joke around and answer each other’s questions.
The panel was deafening! How do you guys handle all of the screaming and crying?
Dom: “(laughs) Oh I’m drunk, I get drunk super early in the morning.”
Matt: “See he’s allowed to say that, he’s British and he can say that. I honestly think it’s really nice. It’s nice that people are really enthusiastic about the things you do.”
Dom: “Yeah it’s kinda like having like a thousand people say you’re doing a good job. Try and imagine that! Going somewhere and people are like ‘good job! Good job! Good job!’ And then there’s some who are like ‘I hate you, you’re awful.’ There’s one guy who’s like ‘you’re terrible, you suck,’ we have a couple of people saying…when we’re training for fights, and stuff someone once said ‘you need to work on your kicks,’ and I was like ‘well I’m training, that’s what I’m trying to do!’”
Matt:“I got told one time that I didn’t hold the bow right! But I think Alec knows what he’s doing because he’s being doing it since he was a little kid, so you know Alec’s got it figured out. He doesn’t need to do the traditional method of shooting. (laughs)”
Will we see a relationship form between Jace and Jocelyn this season?
Dom: “To an extent. You see there’s definitely a relationship if you look at a relationship in terms of the broadest sense, there is a relationship that develops. But there’s anger there. There’s a lot of anger there. Neither of those two people are ready to fall into a mother-son relationship, neither of them are. There’s wanting on both sides. There’s wanting for Jocelyn to deal with this son and there’s wanting for Jace to have a mother. He never had a mother. He wants this person in his life, but there’s fear and trepidation on both sides as well.”
We saw Clary dealing with the Clave. She was kind of outed, and no one really wanted to connect themselves to her, how does Jace deal with that?
Matt: “That’s sorta…that’s the thing. So we can’t really answer that one. (laughs) You know that’s what we’re going to find out.”
Dom: “I mean as it stands at the outset Valentine and Jace are still together, and we don’t know exactly why. We don’t know what Jace is planning. We don’t know why he left. Was it to save his friends or because he’s actually drawn to his biological father? We don’t know from the outset and unfortunately that question is answered throughout the season so I can’t say anything right now otherwise I’m giving everything away.”
Matt: “(laughs) And that wouldn’t be fun for anyone.”
From your perspective has the tone gotten darker for you guys this season?
Dom: “Oh infinitely so. You guys saw the footage of Aldertree, meeting him and cutting to Jace getting punched in the face by a giant. It’s a lot darker this year, and it’s giving us more freedom to play with elements of psyche and abilities and consciousness that we wouldn’t have had an ability to deal with before. So it’s great for us.”
Matt: “This season is scary.”
Dom: “It is scary.”
Matt: “Some of the demons are quite scary. They’re very terrifying.”
Dom: “Like actually terrifying for actors.”
Matt: “Yeah like little kids watch our show…I don’t know what to say.”
Dom: “It’s very very scary.”
Is a lot of that going to be visual effects?
Dom: “50/50. We have some amazing actors and physical actors coming in to play and evolve the mobility and the structure of some of these creatures and how they’re going to breathe and move. So we have these amazing, actually fairly well-known actors coming into to play those and that’ll be great. Then that will be embellished with CGI and VFX. ”
Can you tease anything about the dynamic shift happening as Season 2 progresses?
Dom: “We can tease that everyone wants the same thing. Everyone wants Jace back and for Valentine to be back, but for different reasons. The Clave wants one thing, the team wants another, and then we can also kind of tease that relationships are going to be tested throughout this. Everyone’s relationships are going to be tested and pushed throughout Season 2.”
Matt: “Everyone is going to find themselves in a position that they don’t want to be in and sometimes there’s nothing they can do about it. They have to find creative ways to solve problems, which is what life is like sometimes minus demons and Valentine. (laughs)
