Dungeons, Dragons and Dubstep – “Scalebound” from Platinum Games
Have you ever wanted to hang out with your friends on beautiful Saturday afternoon where the breeze was fair and the temperature was a comfortable 75 with not a cloud in the sky? Did you ever want to do that while listening to dubstep and riding on the back of a dragon? This probably sounds the wish list of every GoT-watching hipster out there, but it’s not. It’s Scalebound, an upcoming action role-playing video game developed by PlatinumGames and published by Microsoft Studios, currently scheduled for release in 2017 for Xbox One and Microsoft Windows.
If you’re a gamer, you might be familiar with Scalebound already. In the game players take on the role of Drew, a headphone-rocking Neo Dante-esque character who’s best pal is a dragon named Thuban. By using a variety of weapons to defeat enemies, and by issuing commands to this fully customizable dragon, players will fight, fly, or whatever-their-way through the world of Draconis, an open world that promotes exploration and that features a giant mushroom that pulses energy from it that attracts all manner of creatures – human and otherwise.
Scalebound’s concept was developed when PlatinumGames was first established, but generated little interest at first and was passed over for Bayonetta. After another pass post-Bayonetta, the concept was revised yet again and development officially started in 2013.
Creator Hideki Kamiya described the game as a dream come true for him as he always imagined creating a game where dragons were players’ main companion. In addition to the actions above, players will also be able to play through the whole campaign alongside four other friends.
Officially announced at E3 2014 via a cinematic trailer, it wasn’t until Gamescom 2015 that we got a sneak peek at what the gameplay would be like along with Platinum’s announcement that the game would have four-player co-op. Expanded on last month at E3 2016, we also learned that this co-op would extend beyond just the boss battles like many thought and into the full campaign of Scalebound.
Sadly, the game was delayed from its initial timeframe of “Holiday 2016” and pushed back until 2017.
