From Dust to Stardust: In Memory of Today’s MCM, David Bowie
I woke up this morning and saw the devastating news that David Bowie had passed away at the age of 69. Cancer sucks. This was (it’s hard to use past tense) an extremely talented man who changed the way we looked at music. Today’s Man Crush Monday is dedicated to Ziggy Stardust himself.
My first experience with David Bowie was seeing him as the Goblin King in The Labyrinth. I was 15 and my math teacher let us watch it right before school let out for the holidays. I was completely floored. I sought him out after that and wasn’t disappointed. I was pleased to find several years later that he was also featured in Christopher Nolan’s The Prestige as everyone’s favorite scientist, Nikola Tesla.
Bowie’s music transformed the scene. Who among us hasn’t been affected in some way by at least one of his songs? “Space Oddity” set the tone for science fiction music (feel free to correct me if I’m wrong!). His presence is everywhere: “Life on Mars” was featured on American Horror Story: Freak Show; “Space Oddity” was a recurring theme in The Secret Life of Walter Mitty.
