How to Get Away with Murder: A Tale of Two Women

Spoiler alert: This article contains information from the episode titled “Two Stones with One Millstone” which may not have aired yet in some regions.
On How to Get Away with Murder, Annalise’s latest client, her friend Jill, was a transgender woman on trial for murdering her husband. In this case, Annalise and Jill shared a common bond in their abusive husbands.
Viewers of How to Get Away with Murder see Annalise as this tough as nails, often cold-hearted attorney. There isn’t a line she wouldn’t cross to win a case. But deep down, she’s a woman who reinvented herself then fell for a man who constantly taunted her because he knew who she really was.
Jill’s story was eerily similar. Whereas Annalise’s spousal abuse was mental, hers was physical. Tired of it and wanting the abuse to end, Jill ended her husband’s life. Jill admits to Annalise that her husband’s abuse stemmed from the fact he knew she was transgender. Annalise sympathized with Jill’s plight. Jill is freed after Annalise resorts to blackmail to convince the D.A. to drop the charges.
It’s a pity that Annalise threw away the love of a man who accepted her for who she really is, Nate. Her manipulation and betrayal drove Nate out of her life. He was angry and bitter that she caused him to lose precious time with his dying wife. He was done, they were over.
In Annalise, Viola Davis has created a character who can go from strong, confident woman to insecure girl, sometimes in the same episode. Annalise Keating has amassed many enemies. And we know one of those enemies has shot her. It was be interesting to learn who pulled the trigger.
How to Get Away with Murder airs Thursdays at 10/9c on ABC.
