‘Riverdale’: Shannen Doherty cast in Luke Perry tribute, Kerr Smith joins in reoccurring role

When Riverdale returns this fall for Season 4, they will pay tribute to the late Luke Perry by bringing in one of his closest friends.

It was announced at Sunday’s San Diego Comic-Con panel that Perry’s former Beverly Hills 90210 co-star Shannen Doherty will make a guest appearance in the season premiere. The episode is titled “Chapter Fifty-Eight: In Memoriam” and will “reflect Luke Perry’s enduring legacy and the indelible imprint his character, Fred Andrews, had on Riverdale,” according to the press release.

“They were such good friends, and when we were putting together this tribute episode, we wanted to make it as special as possible, and so we asked Shannen to do a pivotal, super-emotional role,” executive producer Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa said. “She read the script and immediately said ‘yes.’ It’s very impactful.”

It was also announced that Kerr Smith will have a recurring role on the new season as Riverdale High’s new principal, Mr. Honey. The character is described as “a bit of a hard-ass who takes a harder line with the students this year, especially with the seniors”. Fans will remember Smith for his roles as Jack McPhee on Dawson’s Creek, Robert Quinn on The Fosters, Ryan Thomas on Life Unexpected.
