Exclusive Interview with Country Pop Artist Sarah Beth

Rising country-pop artist Sarah Beth knows how to you hit you in your feels with her music and her latest single “Something Blue” is a great example of that. I got the chance to talk to her about how she would describe her music without using genre names, the story behind her single “Something Blue”, the process for shooting the music video for that song and so much more! Keep reading to see what she had t say! 

Tell me a little bit about how you first got into making and performing music.

I started making music when I was so little. I would record these awful “songs” on GarageBand when I was like 10 then bring them to school and show everyone my “album”… so embarrassing! As I got older, I got more serious about making music and played anywhere I could. As high school graduation approached, I realized my dreams were in Music City so that’s where I went when I was 18!

Was there a specific moment or person that made you realize that music is what you wanted to pursue professionally?

There was no magic moment when it came to inspiring my career decision but every time I played, wrote, or sang, I felt something amazing in that and I wanted to keep it forever.

I’m always genuinely curious about what artists want to convey to listeners with their music. You classify your sound as country-pop, but if you had to describe it without using genre names, how would you describe it?

I feel like my sound is always evolving but to describe it without genre names? Like John Denver dancing in a confetti rainstorm…?

Kind of going off of that, who are some of your musical influences?

Well, John Denver, Patsy Cline, Paul Simon, Kacey Musgraves, T Swizzle (Taylor Swift), and so, so, so many others.

Let’s talk about your new single, “Something Blue.” What’s the story behind this song?

Before my wedding last May, I was feeling all the feels about getting married to the love of my life and realizing there were some figures in my life who weren’t going to be able to be there that day to celebrate that victory with me. I sat on my cold apartment floor in Nashville and really tried to hash out my feelings around that day and “Something Blue” is what came of it.

I always love hearing about the songwriting process so I was wondering if you could give me a glimpse into what it was like specifically for “Something Blue”.

“Something Blue” was an easier write for me. I had the hook and a few ideas ready to go when I sat down to write it, but all of the feelings were just there and so it made the writing process really quick. I probably wrote the song in about 45 minutes.

Were there any major changes made to “Something Blue” once you got into the recording studio, whether it be in the lyrics or something sonically?

My producer, Sal Oliveri, and I really wanted to keep a lot of the original song the same. We changed a few notes here and there, but overall we didn’t change much when we went in to record.

I know you also got to shoot a music video for this song. What was that experience Iike? Was that your first time shooting a music video?

It was amazing and REALLY REALLY cold!! I was able to work with some amazing folks on the video. Fun fact — the horse in my video is named “Maverick” because he was in Maverick [laughs]. I worked with Horse and Wagon in Utah to create all the horse-riding magic. I fell in love with my mini-me and “Grandma” in the video too. I had shot music videos before, but this was something really special to shoot.

You’re still relatively new to the music game. What are some music industry-related goals or benchmarks that you’re aiming to reach in your career over the next couple of years?

PLAY THE GRAND OLE OPRY!!! That might be one of my biggest goals to achieve in my career and something I’ve been dreaming about and working towards for years!

Lastly, we’re called Talk Nerdy With Us because we all have an inner nerd so what is something that you’re currently nerding out about?

I love that [laughs]! Totally nerding out about the show, The Carbonaro Effect. I’ve watched this show a million times but I recently discovered some new episodes and they are freaking hilarious. Another goal I hope to achieve is to help Michael Carbonaro freak some people out!
