‘The Flash’ Season 5 premiere: The future is closer than we think

WARNING: The following article contains major spoilers from the Season 5 premiere of The Flash, titled “Nora”. Do not read if you have not seen the episode or read ahead at your own risk.
The Season 5 premiere of The Flash picked up exactly where we left Team Flash and company: at Joe’s house following the birth of he and Cecile’s child. In comes, Nora, who comments the house is bitchin’ (still one of the funniest lines of Season 4) and reveals she’s actually Barry and Iris’ daughter from 30 years in the future.
Okay, now that we’ve revisited that, let’s jump into some of the biggest moments of the season five premiere and yes, they all revolve around Nora. The first one is that Nora lied to the team about being stuck in the current time and not being able to go home. In reality, she can go home.
So why did she lie?
We’ll get to that in a second. First, we’ve got to talk about her and Iris’ moment at Jitters. After Nora screws up Barry and the team catching Gridlock, he goes back out to deal with the mess of capturing him. Nora and Iris go to grab some coffee and get to know each other, but it ends up being awkward. Iris thought her daughter would become a reporter but she’s actually a CSI. They play a question game but every time Iris brings up herself, Nora seems to want to leave the conversation.
Does Nora have a bad relationship with Iris in the future? Or is something else going on?
Barry realizes Nora’s actions reflected how he grew up, so he goes to confront her. She shows him the 2024 newspaper that says he disappeared. When Barry asks her how long he went missing, she replies that he never came back.
That is a nod to the Flash comics where Barry dies after stopping Anti-Monitor’s plan to destroy the Earth, with his soul resting in the speed force.
Barry then realizes he’d miss all his daughter’s ‘firsts’ and decides against sending her back to her time period.
As the episode ends, Nora, as XS, is heard saying her real mission is to stop her dad from disappearing in the future.
Episode Notes:
- In the newspaper headline, it mentions Batwoman being a part of the same universe as The Flash and Arrow. We’ve all been wondering if Arrow will be canceled after its upcoming season but this revelation leads me to believe it won’t.
- Cicada makes his official debut in the episode but its very minor.
- The mystery of Killer Frost took a turn when Ralph uncovered a fraudulent death certificate of Caitlin’s father. He’s alive, everyone!
