TNWU Bi-Weekly Superlatives (June 26th-July 9th)

Most Badass Character: Game of Thrones

Cersei

Cersei Lannister: Epic badass.  Okay, so that may not be the actual dictionary definition, but it definitely should be.  In the Game of Throne’s season finale, Cersei opted not to attend her trial and instead use wildfire to essentially blow up the Sept of the High Sparrow, marking the largest casualty on the show.  Not only did she kill the High Sparrow, but she also managed to kill Margaery and countless others, which then led to the Kind committing suicide.  So, yeah, she was pretty badass.

Biggest Jerk: Scream

Kieran

After the school went into lockdown when Jake’s body was discovered, Kieran has a run-in with the police.  He has a gun in his locker, and he ends up making a deal with Sheriff Acosta to be the “in” that he needs and provide Acosta with information.  And so begins the trying times of Kieran throwing Emma, his girlfriend, under the bus.  First, he tells the sheriff about Emma having Jake’s phone and he later goes to talk to the sheriff specifically about Emma after having apologized to her about telling the police on her.

SHADIEST CHARACTER: OUTLANDER

When she was introduced in the first season, Gellis Duncan became one of those characters that viewers needed to watch out for because you never knew what secrets she was hiding.  Even her supposed death seemed to hint that there was still more to her left to discover.  In the season two finale, we finally learned more about this elusive, compelling character.  We find her again in a different time as Gillian Edgars, but she’s unmistakably the same person: conniving, deadly and ruthless with just enough conviction that you wonder if her madness was justified.  Even the murder of her husband, while horrendous, carries an air of delivered justice.  Without a doubt, there is still more to this character left to explore.  Hopefully, the next season gives us more opportunities to delve into that beautiful yet dangerous mind. Biggest otp: outlander

For fans of the books, we all knew this moment was coming: the moment that Claire has to travel back to her own time and leave Jaimie behind.  For fans of the show, they might have been a little less prepared for the emotional roller coaster that is this scene.  Driven to the point of no return, Jaime and Claire have to say goodbye to each other, ending their epic love affair and effectively sending them both on separate paths for years to come.  And, unsurprising, their farewell scene was full of passion and sorrow.  They try to drink in as much of each other as possible in a desperate attempt to find comfort and then together walk toward the stone that will soon separate them.  In many ways, this scene captured all the elements of their relationship: stubbornly dedicated to each other despite the odds set against them; rooted to different time periods but bound together by love; and committed to putting each other first, above all else.  It was truly a beautiful albeit tragic OTP moment. (Contributed by Jackie Bojarski)

Most Emotional Scene: Containment

Katie Saying Goodbye to Quinton

After Katie got sick, we all wanted her to get better.  For Jake and for Quinton.  But once she started going downhill she said her goodbyes.  Her saying goodbye to her son was heartbreaking. (Contributed by Allie Warner)

Most Heartbreaking Moment: Houdini and Doyle

When Adelaide Shoots Her Husband

Adelaide just found out her husband was alive – after believing him dead as a suicide – at the center of a massive plot.  He warns her to stay away, but she’s a police investigator so she can’t.  Houdini and Doyle help her piece the puzzle together and figure out the plot is to assassinate President McKinley.  Her husband shoots Doyle who is trying to protect the President and Adelaide draws and shoots her husband.  She’s so devastated that not only was her husband now dead but that her whole marriage was a lie and she never really knew the person she’d been married to. Best Plot-twist: Game of Thrones

Jon Snow’s Parentage is revealed

It turns out that Jon Snow, who is now the King of the North, really has no claim to the title.  While many fans saw this coming and have been anticipating the big reveal for a while now, it’s still a massive plot twist.  Jon Snow is not Ned Stark’s bastard son, but rather the son of Lyanna Stark and Rhaegar Targaryen, making him Daenerys’ cousin.  You know nothing Jon Snow…at least regarding your family.

Most Shocking: Preacher

Jesse Tells Eugene to go to hell

Okay, that doesn’t sound shocking but Jesse has the power of an angel/demon inside of him so when he tells you to do something you do it.  Poor luckless Eugene is calling the Preacher out for abusing his powers when Jesse, who is really high on a power trip, tells him to go to hell.Poof. Most Terrifying Scene: Scream

Fairground Fun

It should just be an unspoken rule that you never go into a fairground at night…especially not alone.  But this didn’t stop Noah from venturing into the fairgrounds in the hopes of identifying Piper’s accomplice and either confirm or deny his suspicions that Audrey could be it.  He eventually came to his senses and left, but ended up right back where he started in an even worse predicament: his hands bound and tied to an amusement ride car.  A brief run-in with the killer and moments of suspense

Performer of the Week: Preacher

Joseph Gilgun

Joseph is the luckless 129-year-old vampire Cassidy on Preacher and he’s been stealing scenes and hearts since episode 1.  In this past episode, Cassidy finds out that the girl he’s majorly crushing on is his friend’s lost love.  The look on his face as he realizes this is so crushing you just want to cuddle him.  Joseph does a great job with the show’s comedy as well and steals the scene more often than not. Honorable Mention: Caitriona Balfe (Outlander)

Out of all the phenomenal performances in the season two finale of “Outlander,” Caitriona Balfe’s as Claire definitely stood out.  A lot of the major emotional moments hinged on her skills as an actress, which is a good thing, since Balfe delivered at every turn.  Between her heated yet heartbreaking confrontation with her daughter to her devastating goodbye scene with Jaime, Balfe was simply captivating.  It was as if all the nuance and reserved passion that we’ve been lucky enough to witness from her since the show’s inception was magnified to an awe-inspiring degree.  I can’t wait to see what she delivers next season! (Contributed by Jackie Bojarski)
