The Maine Releases Cover of Justin Bieber’s “Love Yourself”
Since the release of 2015’s American Candy, The Maine seems to have done everything they can to avoid taking it easy. There was a spring tour with Real Friends and Knuckle Puck. Then the end of 2015 saw the band release Covers (Side A), a collection of 90’s pop songs redone and updated. While lead vocalist John O’Callaghan has been putting finishing touches on his latest project, John The Ghost, The Maine has headed back into the studio and wrapped up a continuation of their covers project, announcing the upcoming release of Covers (Side B).
“It is always a great learning process to see how other song writers put songs together,” drummer Pat Kirch said of the project. “We always have a good time recording cover songs because of the lack of pressure. We like to use cover songs to take some chances with sounds that we normally don’t try.”
While Side A found the band dabbling in 90’s fare such as the Backstreet Boys “As Long As You Love Me” and Len’s “Steal My Sunshine,” Side B will start off with a more modern track. The first single, an upbeat rendition of Justin Bieber’s “Love Yourself,” was released by the band April 21.
“We haven’t fully converted to the church of Bieber just yet, but we decided to try our hand at covering this religious hymn,” O’Callaghan said of the release of “Love Yourself.”
While the track listing for Side B has not been released, it will certainly follow suit with a more modern song selection. “We have not covered any current songs in a long time so we wanted to branch out and try something current,” said Kirch.
The release of Covers (Side B) on June 24th will coincide with the beginning of the Maine’s run on the 2016 Warped Tour. Fans will have a chance to pick up physical copies of the EP for free with the purchase of “American Candy” on the tour dates.
