Cover Wars: Tenerife Sea

“Tenerife Sea” is Track 8 on Ed Sheeran’s second studio album, X. The song was released in June of 2014, first in Australia and New Zealand then worldwide. Prior to the song’s release it had been played multiple times, the first Ed’s October 2013 performance at Madison Square Garden. While this song is not a single from X, “Tenerife Sea” reached number 14 on Spotify’s most streamed worldwide tracks under the sleep category, as well making Spotify’s list for popular first dance songs, coming in at number 5.
The song tells the story of Ed’s first time at the Grammy’s and an after party where he (and his girlfriend at the time) don’t want to be. They rather be alone with each other. This came after Ed lost his first Grammy nomination of his career to Fun. and their song “We Are Young.” The reference ‘Tenerife Sea” is referring to Ed’s girlfriend’s eyes that are so blue that they remind him of the body of water surrounding Tenerife in the Canary Islands of Spain.
This song is a love song through and through that exhibits Ed’s miraculous ability to paint a picture with his lyrics and guitar. I’ve been in love with “Tenerife Sea” since the second I heard it long before there was a studio version. So to mark my almost two year anniversary of fallin in love with this song, here are my Top 5 covers of Ed Sheeran’s “Tenerife Sea”. Don’t forget to vote for your favorite below!
