Poldark: Review of Episode 5
A new life is celebrated while a way of life ends. After the birth of their daughter Julia, Ross explores the possibility of opening a copper smelting company and is again looking for backers.
Demelza, while adjusting to new motherhood, is committed to helping Verity reconnect with her lost love, Captain Blamey. Demelza and Verity have grown closer since the former kitchen maid’s marriage to Ross and her pregnancy. Now Demelza longs for Verity to find the domestic bliss she enjoys. The way Verity was Henry Higgins to Demelza’s Eliza Doolittle, Demelza plays Fairy Godmother to Verity’s Cinderella so that she can find her happily ever after with her Prince Charming, Captain Blamey.
Poldark Episode 5 also introduces three new characters: Dr. Dwight Enys, an old friend of Ross’ and Mark and Karen Daniels. These characters destinies will become intertwined as the series progresses.
Finally, Francis looses the family mine in a poker game thus putting his family’s gentry lifestyle in jeopardy.
There were several storyline plots explored in this highly enjoyable episode.
Poldark continues Sundays at 9:00PM on Masterpiece on PBS.
