Darren Star has done it again with his new Netflix series Emily in Paris. The show follows Emily, an ambitious twenty-something marketing executive from Chicago who unexpectedly lands her dream job in Paris (where the show was entirely filmed!) when her company acquires a French luxury marketing company and she is tasked with revamping their social media strategy. Emily’s new life in Paris is filled with intoxicating adventures and surprising challenges as she juggles winning over her work colleagues, making friends, and navigating new romances.
I got the chance to see the show early and I highly recommend checking it out, especially if you’re a fan of Star’s other shows Sex in the City and Younger. If you need even more convincing as to why, here are 3 specific reasons:
Emily is extremely relatable
From the first minute of the pilot, I found myself relating to Emily’s optimistic, strong and confident personality. She doesn’t let anyone walk over her, despite her new co-workers trying to intimidate and take advantage of her. She is determined to dive in head first and immerse herself in all that Paris has to offer, even though she is the definition of a fish out of water. Darren Star said it best in an interview with Entertainment Tonight: “I actually think that everyone needs a little bit of Emily right now.”
The Fashion
It’s obvious that a show set in Paris would probably feature excellent fashion, but the costumes on Emily in Paris are next level. Star tapped costume designer Patricia Field, who he’s worked with in the past, and French costume designer Marylin Fitoussi for the show and the looks they put together for Emily and the rest of the cast are absolutely exquisite.
One of the things that I love is that you can see the evolution of Emily’s character in her fashion throughout the season. Her looks start off perhaps a bit more casual, but the more time she spends in Paris, the more her clothes reflect the city’s glamour. It’s truly a work of art and I want a season 2 solely to see what looks Field and Fitoussi dream up.
Swoon-worthy Ships
Paris is known as city of love and it is definitely not lacking in this version of Paris. Without spoiling too much for people who have yet to watch, there are a few different love triangles amongst our main cast of characters that are intriguing and fun to watch develop.
But it’s Emily’s relationship with Gabriel, her downstairs neighbor, that has me swooning. Their chemistry is off-the-charts from the first minute they meet. But the longing looks is not the only thing to love about this relationship. Over the course of the first season, Emily and Gabriel develop a deeper connection that keeps me invested in them till the very last moment.
