‘The Masked Singer’ Season 3 Premiere Recap: One celeb bites the dust

If you thought Super Bowl Sunday was just for football fans, you’d be wrong. Season 3 of The Masked Singer kicked off following the big game and revealed one of its big celebrities yet at the end of the hour.

This season works a little differently with the celebs split into three groups of six: Groups A, B, and C. From there, all three groups will be cut down to three singers.

Without further ado, let’s jump into this recap of night one.

White Tiger

The season kicks off with the White Tiger. In his video package, he made several references to New England and the Northeast. He also mentioned winning championships and right away, I know this is an athlete.

For his performance, he sang Vanilla Ice’s “Ice Ice Baby” and you can tell right away that this guy is not a singer.

Who is behind the mask? My guess: Former New England Patriots tight end Rob Gronkowski.

This masked celeb gave clues about taking it “step by step” and that now he wants to go slow and steady to win the race. In his performance, he surprised me with how good his voice was as he sang Seal’s “Kiss From a Rose.”

The judges said they got a “boy band” vibe from him and I felt that too. The clues about surfing and grilling may be a red herring.

Who is behind the mask? My guess: New Kids On The Block’s Jordan Knight.

One of the weirder costumes in show history was up next and yes, I’m talking about that llama! From his clues, it is a dead give away that it’s a comedian and his performance of Ricky Martin’s “She Bangs” because it’s a ‘love song’ really confirms that. The performance was hilariously funny, which is probably what the celebrity intended for it to be.

Who is behind the mask? My guess: The Price Is Right host Drew Carey.

Miss Monster

This is the first celebrity who me stumped. Nothing was really given away from the clues but her performance of “Something to Talk About” by Bonnie Raitt was very soulful, which tells me this person has to be an accomplished singer.

Who is behind the mask? My guess: I have no clue! I’ll go on a limb and say one of the Braxton sisters.

This was one of the easiest guesses of the night. The celebrity made an obvious hint about a skateboard-vs-truck accident. He has talent but when it comes to rapping; this was clear in his performance of Lenny Kravitz’s “Are You Gonna Go My Way?”. There’s only one person in the world with a voice that unique.

Who is behind the mask? My guess: Rap icon Lil Wayne.

The final performance of the night came from down under (literally!). The clues for this one included the celebrity saying, “I have to fight for my family and show them that bullies never win.” She sang a nice rendition of “Dancing On My Own” by Robyn that left the judges and audience pretty emotional. I’m not sure if the Australian thing is a red herring because the kangaroo is from Australia and this celebrity is in a kangaroo costume.

Who is behind the mask? My guess: former American Idol winner Jordin Sparks.

The Results

Following all the performances, host Nick Cannon returned with the audience vote. He revealed that the Robot had the fewest votes and would therefore be eliminated. However, before saying goodbye, it was time to see who was behind the mask. It was revealed to be Lil Wayne! I was right – too easy!
