‘Batwoman’ 1×13 recap: Mary finds out Kate’s big secret

Following last week’s episode of Batwoman, I asked whether or not Mary would find out that Kate is Batwoman. Well, it didn’t take long for me to get that answer.
In case you missed it, here’s a recap of 1×12: “Drink Me”
Taking a bite out of crime
Kate, Mary, Luke and probably most of the viewers are still struggling with Beth 2.0’s death from last week’s episode. They are determined to find out who killed her, especially since Gotham thinks that Alice is really dead. With all of this going on, Luke briefs Kate on this week’s villain, Nocturna, a literal vampire who bites her victims to harvest.
Batwoman gets into a fight with Nocturna but is bitten before being knocked out. Sophie rescues Batwoman and the first attempt pretty much backfired. Kate decided to throw a party at her gay club to lure Nocturna out. So, they just capture her and the episode is over, right? Wrong! Luke tracks down the real Nocturna and discovers she has disease that requires her to constantly have fresh blood, hence why she is stealing people’s blood.
Let’s just cut to the chase: Nocturna is going to kill Mary but Alice (yes, you read that correctly!) comes in and offers to help Mary while Kate goes to stop Nocturna. As you can probably guess, Kate stops Nocturna and gives her to The Crows.
The Bat’s out of the bag!
Mary was pretty suspicious the entire episode when Kate wasn’t feeling well after being bitten by Nocturna. Towards the end of the hour, Mary was back in her office listening to Vesper Fairchild’s podcast, who mentions ketamine as a drug used by Nocturna. Mary pieces it all together and realizes Kate is Batwoman.
Eeep! I’m excited about this. I just hope that Kate and Luke are not going to play it off like Mary is dumb or something. It is time to bring her into the fold and have her join the team.
Is Sophie close to finding out about Kate?
Is Sophie going to be the next person to find out Kate’s identity? The episode ends with Batwoman and Sophie meeting on the roof. Sophie informs her that Jacob knows they have been working together and gave her a choice: Batwoman or The Crows. Sophie mentions that she was about to choose her work over love but not again, and kisses Batwoman!
Okay, so Sophie totally has to know Kate is Batwoman now, right? There’s no way she’d forget what kissing her ex-girlfriend felt like. I think its only a matter of time before Sophie joins the team next.
Other Thoughts
- Alice really embraced her psycho side in the episode. With Mouse missing, she was she starts talking to a dummy with a flesh face. You know, totally normal stuff. As you can expect, Kate allowing her to die has really screwed with Alice’s head. More than usual!
- I’ve been pretty harsh on the show in its first season as it struggles to know what it wants to be. However, this episode felt like a definite turning point for the series as we reach the halfway mark. It feels much more exciting and has me interested ever since the “Crisis” crossover took place.
