‘Love Island USA’ opens with disappointing ratings in American debut

Love Island USA has officially come to the US, but not everyone is feeling the love.

Despite heavy promotion, the dating reality show debuted to just 2.7 million viewers and a 0.6 rating in the 18-49 demo. That’s a much lower demo rating than ABC’s The Bachelorette (1.5), NBC’s America’s Got Talent (1.4) and CBS’ Big Brother (1.2).

These numbers are not what CBS’ bosses were expecting when they planned to air the show five nights a week. If the figures continue to drop, it is likely the show will be pulled back some from the network.

Love Island UK aired on main channel ITV when it debuted five years ago, but low numbers forced it transition to smaller network ITV2. Since CBS put so much commitment into this show, would they consider putting it on CBS All Access? Time will tell.
