The best moments from the penulimate episode of ‘Gotham’

With just three days to go until the final episode ever of Gotham, last Thursday night’s penultimate episode meant it was time for storylines to begin wrapping up and to start setting the stage for the future.

Obviously, there are spoilers ahead. So if you haven’t seen the episode, don’t read on because then you’ll be upset that you did. Here are the best moments from the penulimate episode:

Storylines wrapped up

The episode kicks off with Nyssa al Ghul (Jaime Murray) stealing Barbara’s (Erin Richards) baby and raising her as her own once Gotham is destroyed for good. Meanwhile, Jim (Ben McKenzie) is a little busy over at the GCPD dealing with Bane (Shane West) and the rest of the military.

With the show jumping ahead 10 years for its series finale, it is obvious that the city is saved and Jim and the rest of our favorite characters are alive. Where did everyone end up? Well, Nyssa is wounded and took the submarine to the main land. Bane was defeated, but judging by what we all know from the comics, Gotham City hasn’t seen the last of him.

Meanwhile, Penguin (Robin Lord Taylor), and Riddler (Cory Michael Smith) realize they have a chance to start over. They embrace their new partnership and vow to become super villains in this new era for Gotham City. And judging by the trailer for the final episode, they will do just that.

The show does a mini-time jump and we see that Jim is finally made commissioner and Barbara has named her child Barbara Lee Gordon, aka future Batgirl.

Bruce says goodbye

Bruce tells Jim he is leaving Gotham in order to keep Alfred (Sean Pertwee) and Selina safe. He leaves Selina a letter and, despite not knowing what it said, she looked heartbroken. She runs to the airport to stop him or say goodbye — we’re not sure which one — but she is too late as they lock eyes when the plane is already taking off.

This is an important development for Bruce’s character because as we all know from the comics, Bruce leaves Gotham, trains, and ultimately returns to become Batman.

Camren departs

Camren Bicondova, who plays Selina Kyle, will not be in the series finale when the show concludes on Thursday. The rumors of a casting replacement had been swirling for awhile now but Bicondova confirmed the news on her Twitter account.

She stated it was her decision to leave the role because she would not feel right playing a grown up version of her character when Camren herself is still a teenager. As a result of Camren’s decision, Selena Kyle will be played by Lilli Simmons in Thursday’s series finale.

Episode Notes:

  • I want to know: when Bruce does return as Batman, will he reveal his identity to anyone like Jim or Alfred?
  • I know I’ll be sad as the series ends this week, but I’ll give a more thorough recap on the show as a whole.

What did you make of the penultimate episode? Let me know in the comments below!

Gotham airs its series finale Thursday at 8/7c on Fox.
