It is the end of an era on The CW for the Arrowverse. The network officially announced on Wednesday that Arrow will end with the upcoming eighth season, which will have 10 episodes and air in the fall.
“This was a difficult decision to come to, but like every hard decision we’ve made for the past seven years, it was with the best interests of Arrow in mind,” showrunner Beth Schwartz and executive producers Berlanti and Marc Guggenheim said Wednesday in a joint statement. “We’re heartened by the fact that Arrow has birthed an entire universe of shows that will continue on for many years to come. We’re excited about crafting a conclusion that honors the show, its characters, and its legacy and is grateful to all the writers, producers, actors, and — more importantly — the incredible crew that has sustained us and the show for over seven years.”
The news comes after rumors the show would end following the news that the Crisis on Infinite Earths crossover would see the death of two major characters across the Arrowverse. In last fall’s crossover, Oliver Queen, played by Stephen Amell, made a deal to save the lives of The Flash and Supergirl. However, the terms of the deal were not made known, and it is rumored he may be one of the deaths.
An emotional Amell posted a nine-minute Facebook Live video and revealed he went to The CW, as well as show producers, and informed them he wanted to move on from the role of Oliver Queen, thus ending the show.
Arrow premiered back in 2012 and helped launch shows like The Flash, Supergirl, and DC’s Legends of Tomorrow.
