Netflix Cancels ‘Jessica Jones’ and ‘The Punisher’

Netflix’s slaughter of popular Marvel shows continues, with its latest victims being Jessica Jones and The Punisher. Netflix made the announcement Monday morning, adding these two shows to last year’s carnage of Iron Fist, Luke Cage and Daredevil. The cancellation of The Punisher and Jessica Jones will effectively end the successful (and profitable) partnership that Netflix and Marvel have had for the last four years.

The move has fans confused and angry. It seems like such a bonehead move on the streaming service’s part to end its Marvel contract. Many of us fans believe this has everything to do with the proposed start-up of Disney’s streaming service, since Disney owns Marvel. Disney has thus far denied that as a motive, although it seems to be the most logical answer to this big mystery.

Despite Disney’s denial, comments made Marvel Television President Jeph Loeb have fans thinking this may not be the end of the shows. Deadline reported a week ago that Loeb signed a deal with Hulu on February 11 for four series and one special. This was followed up with a rather cryptic letter he posted to fans on the Marvel website. In the letter, he thanked fans for believing them when people said it couldn’t be done and even ended with “to be continued.”

The last piece of evidence, for now, comes from an interview Loeb did with Decider, where he hinted that the shows would return, possibly on another streaming service. “I would not be surprised if any of those things reemerged. It depends on showrunner, it depends on availability of cast, all of those things,” Loeb said. “It’s not like we’re a doctor show where the show got canceled because of bad ratings.”

What do you guys think? Are you sad about The Punisher and Jessica Jones being canceled by Netflix? Do you think they will return at some point in the future? Let me know in the comments below!

The Punisher Season 2 is currently airing on Netflix, and Season 3 of Jessica Jones will air this summer.
