WARNING: The following article contains spoilers from the Arrowverse crossover Elseworlds Part 1 & 2. Do not read ahead if you have not seen the episode or read ahead at your own risk.
This year’s Arrowverse event began with The Flash on Sunday night as Barry (Grant Gustin) and Oliver (Stephen Amell) underwent a Freaky Friday body swap in the first installment of the three-part Elseworlds crossover. It was pretty funny watching Grant and Stephen use each other’s abilities in the field. Great acting from both guys.
At first, Barry and Olly had trouble convincing Team Flash they’d really switched bodies, so they were imprisoned in the holding cell in STAR Labs.

Anyway, Barry and Oliver break out thanks to some pretty epic abilities. How awesome were those special effects? Brilliant job to the crew. As I was saying, Barry and Oliver break out and head to Earth 38 to visit Supergirl (Melissa Benoist) and Superman (Tyler Hoechlin) for some help. Cisco breaches to tell them there’s a robot trying to destroy Central City.
It was great to see Oliver and Barry use their time at the farm to learn more about each other’s abilities and genuinely have a heart-to-heart moment.
We’re not sure at this point exactly how Barry and Oliver switched places but we know it has to do with Dr. John Deegan (Jeremy Davies) getting the Book of Destiny to rewrite reality as he sees fit from The Monitor.
The big team-up of Superman, SuperGirl, Oliver-The Flash, and Barry-Green Arrow was pretty cool to watch as they took down Amazo. Although, it was not so cool with Iris (Candice Patton), who is upset that Barry is slowly turning to the darkness as Oliver did.
Following Amazo’s takedown, Cisco vibes so Barry and Oliver can see Dr. John Deegan talking to The Monitor, who in turn knows Cisco’s vibing him. Kara says she doesn’t know who either of the bad guys are but Oliver says they do know they must go to Gotham City after seeing Wayne Tower.
Part 1 Episode Notes
- Before Superman returns to Earth 38, Sherloque asks him to deliver an alimony check to his third ex-wife. That had me laughing so hard.
The crossover continued on Monday night on Arrow as Barry, Oliver, and Kara traveled to Gotham to search for the man responsible for rewriting reality. Before going further, we’ve got to talk about that intro. Gustin narrating and appearing the in the show opening, doing exactly what Amell would do, was gold. Kudos to the producers for really embracing the body swap thing.
Anyway, Barry, Oliver, and Kara get into some trouble and are bailed out by a mysterious woman – Kate Kane aka Batwoman (Ruby Rose). Seeing Gotham in the Arrowverse was so much cooler than I thought it would. It doesn’t beat Gotham on Fox but filming in Chicago really gave it a classic look.
Kane points the trio to Arkham Asylum, where Deegan works. They track him down but he makes a run for it, releasing all of Arkham’s prisoners in the process. Barry and Oliver get hit with Scarecrow’s fear toxin and hallucinate that they are fighting their worst nemeses when in actuality they’re fighting each other. It’s here where John Barrowman makes his return as Malcolm Merlyn. The fight sequence was impressively shot and showed the struggle from the hero’s point of view as well as the outsider POV, as witnessed by Caitlyn.
Kara recovers the Book of Destiny and Batwoman tells them to leave Gotham, but not before Kara tells Kate she knows she’s Batwoman (x-ray vision for the win!).
I’m so PUMPED for a Batwoman series on The CW after seeing her in action. Ruby did not disappoint.
The team returns to ARGUS where Earth-90 Flash (John Wesley Shipp) breached to inform them a crisis is coming. That’s when The Monitor appears in Star City to tell the heroes he is testing them all to see which universe is strong enough to handle the impending threat.
Just before the episode ends, Deegan re-writes history again. This time, Barry and Oliver are wanted criminals and are caught by Central City Police officers Malcolm Merlyn, Lil Slade, and Ricardo Diaz. As they look to escape, Barry and Oliver are cornered by a now evil Superman.
Part 2 Episode Notes
- Oliver and Felicity made up in the crossover with Olly saying people change but his love for her never will. It is good to know Arrow fans got a resolution to the Olicity issue before the shows break until the new year.
- Earth 90 Flash tells Diggle, “John, you are not wearing your ring.” Which is the biggest hint yet that Diggle is the Green Lantern on Earth 90. Can we please get a Green Lantern series next?!
