Is there trouble in the ballroom?
Dancing With The Stars is taking a break for the Spring 2019 season, a stark change from the usual two seasons per year. TVLine first reported the news and multiple outlets have confirmed the show is not on ABC’s Spring schedule but is expected to return in Fall 2019.
The news follows a controversial 27th season, which was won by radio DJ Bobby Bones. Several celebrities who were considered front-runners were given the boot early on in the competition. Meanwhile, Grocery Store Joe and Bones, who both struggled to get high scores, went deep into the semifinals.
Obviously, the news of a break raises a couple of questions – are they revamping the show? Or, has DWTS run its course? Ratings for Season 27 were down by 32 percent in the all-important 18-49 demo as well as down 23 percent from a year ago. The season finale attracted just 8.4 million viewers, a new low for a fall finale.
And both celebrities and fans alike called on the show for changes to the voting system and a general overhaul of sorts. Maybe the year off will give showrunners time to update and reinvigorate the show. Could that include changes to the judges, hosts, and format? Watch this space for updates as they come.
Meanwhile, there is no news yet about a second run of the spin-off Dancing With The Stars: Juniors, which just wrapped its inaugural season on Sunday.
