My San Diego Comic Con 2018 Highlights

Even though it took place at the same venue as usual, and during the same time of year, this year’s San Diego Comic-Con felt a little different. Whether it was the lack of big names, such as Marvel, Netflix, and HBO, or just some new rules implemented for congoers, SDCC 2018 was like no other SDCC I’ve been to, and for that, I think once again the original nature of the con was able to be highlighted. Here are some of my favorite moments from this year’s con. Be sure to check out our highlight reel above!

Cosplay (dogs):

Cosplay is one of the biggest parts of San Diego Comic-Con. For the first time in a while, I didn’t see the usual influx of Jokers running around, but there were still some really awesome cosplayers. What took me by surprise, and brightened up my entire weekend, was the number of dogs dressed up; yes, dogs! Take a look at these Very Good Boys™️.

Shazam! Trailer:

I had seen Entertainment Weekly’s Shazam! cover with Zachary Levi and honestly thought it looked a little cheap, so going into the panel I had zero expectations. The trailer blew my mind. I had the goofiest grin on my face the entire time and cannot wait for the movie now. The cast’s playful banter and great chemistry together during the panel only made it more enjoyable. I’m thinking this is going to be a pivotal point for DC moving forward.

Venom Trailer:

Though I seem to be the only person excited about this, I thought the new Venom footage/trailer we were shown looked amazing! Venom’s dialogue was a little hard to hear (mostly over my own screams in Hall H), but aside from that, it looks like a solid Sony movie. With Riz Ahmed and Tom Hardy together, I’m not sure where they can go wrong.

Deadpool 2 Marketing:

So the Deadpool team and Ryan Reynolds, which are pretty much interchangeable at this point, are basically known for their marketing. They did not hold back at SDCC; after lots of jokes about Fox’s budget, Deadpool still managed to bring lots of goodies to the con including a complete animatronic band, and even toilet seat covers.

Deadpool 2 Uncut:

Yeah, I’m still not over Deadpool clearly. I had the chance to see the completely uncut and unrated version and it was pretty much everything I expected it to be. It’s amazing what editing can do to a movie because this version is almost completely different than the original that was released in 2018. While I prefer the other cut due to some music changes, this uncut version still stands up well.

Offsites:

The offsites are often my favorite part of the entire convention and this year was no different. With an awesome Jack Ryan escape room (which included a super long line), Purge City, Mr. Mercedes, The Good Place and DC taking the cake for the best ones, there was always ample things to do if the convention itself became overwhelming.

Ticketed Lottery:

Many may disagree with me, but in my opinion, the new ticketed lottery system was genius. I didn’t win ANY autographs or exclusives, but I cannot deny that this way was much more efficient. Long gone were the days of waiting in line at 3am to see if you could get even a chance to buy something. With your hopes already squashed a week before the event, you’re not going to get in line anymore because you can’t without your wristband. It makes lines less busy and the whole convention run smoother.

Assassination Nation:

Lastly, I cannot help but mention this panel; it was possibly one of the most underrated of the conventions. Coming directly after the Breaking Bad panel in Hall H, you could literally walk right in to see Bill Skarsgård, Sam Levinson, Suki Waterhouse, Hari Nef, Abra, and Joe Russo talk about their eccentric movie Assassination Nation. The movie follows a town in which every phone gets hacked, which leads to more violence and hysteria in a certain high school surrounding the characters. This was not the average movie you see at SDCC, but I’m really glad they brought attention to it. They showcased a really awesome scene displaying a break-in that had me totally on edge in addition to showing us a trailer.

This year was an absolute blast! If you haven’t already, make sure to check out our YouTube and Instagram for additional coverage.
