Exclusive: Corvyx Talks New “God is a Woman” Cover

CORVYX is a force to be reckoned with. His powerful covers have continued to break the internet time and time again. His new, hauntingly beautiful cover of Ariana Grande’s “God is a Woman” is no different, with his loyal fans racking up over 10,000 views on the video in the first week. I got the chance to talk with CORVYX in depth about the creation of this video, what this song means to him, and what he has to say to the haters. Keep reading to see what he had to say!

Why this song? What does this song mean to you?

In all transparency, I have been patiently waiting for Ariana Grande to drop a new record I can VYX up. She is the “it” girl in pop music and by far the most requested artist for me to cover on my YouTube channel. I did my homework and watched a few Ariana Grande interviews before she dropped the “God is a Woman” single; she mentioned that her grandmother had heard the entire album months prior and repeatedly asked Ariana to play the GIAW record. I knew that was the one I had to cover before I even heard it. It was pure instinct. I chose this song specifically because as a male LGBTQ+ artist I have very much been a product of powerful feminine nurturing and strength. Albeit, an empowering female pop anthem, I believe anyone, regardless of gender/sex, can find relevance in this record.

Where did the concept come from? ‘Cause the core of the video is pretty simplistic, with just you and your dancers.

The concept came from the idea that although I am, by biological standards, a male, I have been the product of incredible and resilient women in my life. I am very much guided by the principles and belief that we are the sum of a greater whole. And if CORVYX were to be broken into itty, bitty pieces he can attribute much of his strength and spirit to the females who have inspired his art. The beautiful dancers in this video are both individual representations of females I admire and the spiritual embodiments and extensions of myself. I envisioned them as the “pieces” of the greater whole, metaphorically speaking as well as physically, considering this video would not be what it is without them.

How long did this take to film? What was the biggest challenge shooting it?

This project took about 3 hours to shoot. The biggest challenge was the time constraint. We executed this video rather quickly from inception to completion with the knowledge that when an artist as hot as Ariana Grande drops a single there is a specific window of time you must adhere to for effective release. Most YouTubers/Social Media gurus know that if you miss a window for release, your time, talent, and effort may drown in the sea of cyber-saturation.

My eye immediately went to the costumes! What went into the choice of having your white outfit juxtaposed with the black outfits of the dancers? Or was it purely aesthetics?

I think so many Vyxens and viewers of my channel have grown accustomed to this idea that an alluring, dark aesthetic has to reflect the same in wardrobe choices. So I thought this would be the opportunity to switch things up and make everyone do a double-take. White is often associated with divinity and what better way to cover this song than to assume an “all white” attire. I actually love the idea of pushing my brand/image into a “white era” but I don’t think I would be able to keep anything clean.

How involved were you in the choreography and what they were doing around you?

My longtime friend and collaborator, Ashley Burger, choreographed this project and I always tell her I want to be as involved as I can be. However, being the perfectionist that I am, I am brutally honest with myself when I feel like I can’t execute the choreo the way it is intended to be executed. For this project, I was very much involved with the conceptual and performance aspect of the choreography. I am extremely grateful and fortunate enough to have people that believe in me and are willing to hop on projects that must come together so quickly.

Where does this video rank for you personally in terms of all of the videos you’ve done?

I am exceptionally proud of this one because of what we were able to accomplish sonically and visually in such a short amount of time. I don’t know if I can rank my videos because that’s like asking a parent to pick a favorite child. My videos are all different extensions of me as an artist. This is a part of myself I have been meaning to show for quite some time and finally had the opportunity to do so. I have always wanted to bend gender norms, dance, and sing the hell out of an Ariana Grande record. Being able to do all three simultaneously and break view records on my channel is more than I could have asked for. What do you say to the people who might ask, “Why the fuck would a guy sing this?”

I’d say, “Because I fucking can!”
