Woman Crush Wednesday: Abigail Spencer
Since Matt Lanter of Timeless was our Man Crush of the week, I felt it most appropriate to feature his co-star and the female lead of one of my favorite shows on television right now. I’m so glad NBC recalled their decision to cancel this wonderful show, which is truly special, in large part due to the awesome cast and the chemistry between them.
Abigail Spencer plays Lucy, a historian, and former history teacher. In last season’s most stunning plot twist, it turned out Lucy is also the daughter of villainous Rittenhouse royalty. Beyond that, she is carrying around a huge amount of unrequited love for Wyatt, Matt Lanter’s character. Abigail does an excellent job of bringing this intelligent, conflicted and complicated woman to life.
Abigail was born in my home state of Florida! Through her Spencer ancestry, she is distantly related to Princess Diana, Prince William, and Prince Henry. All are descended from the same titled Spencer family. Her dad was professional surfer Yancy Spencer, who was a friend to Kathie Lee Gifford. At the age of 4, Abigail started competing in local pageants and won the state title at 11. She studied drama and dance and was in her high school production of Grease. She also sang in her church choir, and is an accomplished vocalist, as we all discovered in the “Hollywoodland” episode this season!
When Abigail was 17, Gifford mentored the young actress as she broke into television, landing her first role as Rebecca on All My Children in June 1999. She also started getting cast in hit TV series, including CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, Gilmore Girls, Ghost Whisperer, Bones, the short-lived vampire series Moonlight, Castle, The Glades, and had recurring roles on Angela’s Eyes (2006), Mad Men (2009), Hawthorne (2010), Adult Swim’s Children’s Hospital (2010-2012), Burning Love (2012-2013), True Detective (2015), Suits (2011-2016), Rectify (2013-2016) and Grey’s Anatomy (2017).
In addition to the small screen, Abigail has graced the large cinematic silver screen. Her first feature film was the cult favorite Cowboys and Aliens in 2011. She had a major breakthrough with Sam Raimi’s 2013 prequel to The Wizard of Oz, Oz The Great and Powerful, alongside James Franco, Mila Kunis, Rachel Weisz, and Michelle Williams. Additionally, Abigail was the lead in Daniela Amavia’s cinematic piece, A Beautiful Now (2015) and most recently starred as Lolita Nowicki in The Sweet Life (2016).
Abigail is also a screenwriter and producer. In 2013, she wrote, starred in and produced the short film “Here and Now.”
Like her counterpart Lucy, Abigail loves history and vintage clothing. We look forward to seeing her shine through many time periods and in many vintage costumes for a whole lot of Timeless seasons to come!
And honestly, I hope she and Wyatt can overcome their romantic complications and reunite soon because I ship Lyatt….timelessly!
