Who Got Snubbed at the 2017 Golden Globes
Despite what we were all told growing up, not everyone is a winner. We can’t all be as fortunate as La La Land as everyone found out during this year’s Golden Globes ceremony. While the awards that the movie received were well-deserved, some of the other choices that the Hollywood Foreign Press made were questionable. Let’s examine a couple of this year’s Golden Globes snubs.
HBO:
HBO, in general, didn’t win any awards this year, which is a shame since they had nominations for Game of Thrones, The Night Of, and Westworld. Riz Ahmed shined bright in The Night Of as the main character Naz and has garnered even more attention lately for his recent role as a pilot in Rogue One. Westworld has the potential to replace Game of Thrones as it continues to garner interest and had amazing performances throughout the season. Lastly, there’s Game of Thrones. This season was extraordinary, and Battle of the Bastards is one of the best episodes of television I have ever seen. Maybe the HFP wasn’t a big fan of Jon Snow being brought back, who knows.
Mahershala Ali and Dev Patel:
Aaron Taylor-Johnson won the award for Best Supporting Actor in a Motion Picture for his role in Nocturnal Animals. As one of the first awards to be given out for the night, it came as a big surprise to everyone. Aaron’s character was barely in the movie, and he was up against Mahershala for his role in Moonlight, which most people thought would be an easy win for him. Dev Patel was also nominated for his role in the incredible movie Lion, but was also overlooked in favor of Aaron. It’s QWHITE interesting if you ask me.
Did people actually watch The Night Manager?
When the crime drama won 3 awards including Best Performances by an Actor, Actress, and Supporting Actor in a Limited Series or Motion Picture Made for Television, it was clear that the HFP only watched one show before voting. After The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story swept the Emmys, it was a definite favorite going into the awards. Most surprising of all was Tom Hiddleston over Riz Ahmed for The Night Of and Courtney B Vance for The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story. To top this surprising win off, he gave a problematic victory speech that had much of the audience rolling their eyes.
Moana:
Lin-Manuel has had a fantastic year, and he probably doesn’t even have enough space for another award, but his work on Moana was worthy of the Best Original Song award. Performed by 16-year-old Auliʻi Cravalho, in How Far I’ll Go Moana sings about how the ocean calls to her, despite the fact that it’s against her father’s wishes. The film also lost Best Animated Feature to another Disney film, Zootopia. Even though they lost the Golden Globe, there’s still hope at the Oscars, and Lin-Manuel would finally complete his EGOT.
Ryan Reynolds
I don’t think anyone honestly thought that Deadpool was going to win anything, but his nominations were game changers for future superhero movies. Even though he lost the awards, he won the night by kissing Andrew Garfield and making all of our SpideyPool dreams come true.
Honorable Mention: Jake Gyllenhaal
He has consistently amazing performances, but for some reason doesn’t even get a nomination. He’s basically how the Oscars were with Leonardo DiCaprio, but with every awards show ever.
