“The Hamilton Mixtape” Has Hit Our Ears and We Are Ecstatic

Friday saw the release of the highly anticipated album The Hamilton Mixtape. And can I say it does not disappoint. We have been teased over the past few weeks with singles like Kelly Clarkson’s soulful It’s Quiet Uptown and the amazing Immigrants (We Get the Job Done) sung by K’NAAN, Snow Tha Product, Riz MC, and Residente. But these songs are only a sample of the brilliance to come.

The album contains three types of songs: previously unpublished demos from way back when the play was supposed to just be a mixtape (such as Congratulations and Cabinet Battle #3), remixes of artists singing some of the musicals popular songs (such as Satisfied and Helpless), and several remixes of artists singing original songs over the beats of Hamilton songs (such as Washingtons By Your Side and My Shot).

There is an impressive amount of musical styles that somehow seamlessly weave from one song to another. One moment you can listen to the beautiful singing of Jill Scott, the next the rapping of Dessa to the powerhouse of Andra Day. Every track reveals another layer to the story of Hamilton and how he and his compatriots still effect and reflect us today. Several of the 23 tracks contain a bit of comedy. Some outright slapstick, like Jimmy Fallon singing You’ll Be Back, and others slightly more covert like the savagery of An Open Letter.

All in all, this album should be on the must-have Christmas list of every Hamilton fan and even those few that haven’t heard the original soundtrack (do you guys exist?). If you have it already, which tracks our your favorite? Discuss below!

The album can be found on iTunes, Spotify, and anywhere physical and digital music can be found.
