Though fans have been waiting nearly nine months to see what’s next, the Shadowhunters season premiere picks up just hours after the events of the finale. To recap and refresh, Jace has left his friends to join his father Valentine, leaving a wake of shock and fear.
Now, all hell (and its demons) has broken loose, and The Institute is in chaos. Alec, Isabelle, and Clary are desperate to find Jace, and are ready to do whatever it takes to bring him home. But, between the arrival of Victor Aldertree – a man on a mission to restore The Institute’s glory – and the newly awakened Jocelyn, Clary and her friends face plenty of hurdles.
Following the season premiere, Shadowhunters season 2 will be a bit different, and definitely darker, courtesy of new showrunners Todd Slavkin and Darren Swimmer. “We felt like the show visually could be stronger. It could be less colorful and less bright and darker, and the action could be more powerful and more visceral,” Slavkin told Empire Magazine. “These visual effects, we could change them and turn them into something that will blow your mind. The portals will be different this year. The warlock magic will be different. The cat eyes will be different. The vamp speed will be different.”
Of course, one fan favorite will be the same, and get even more story. “We loved the Malec stuff,” Slavkin added. “Thought it was so exciting, so rich, such an interesting relationship, but we realized in season two we needed to start from the beginning…”
Shadowhunters returns on Monday, January 2 at 8 p.m. EST on Freeform.
