Netflix Teams Up with Girl Scouts to Encourage Smart Cookies

unspecified-2Smart is the new cool. This is the message that Netflix wants to convey to young girls, and they’ve found a great partner to get the word out: Girl Scouts.

The two have paired up to change a troubling statistic – that despite loving the subject matter, nearly 50% of girls feel that S.T.E.M. (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) isn’t a career path they should pursue.

On October 4, Girl Scouts USA and Netflix hosted an event at the Netflix headquarters in Los Gatos, California, to help encourage girls to do what they love. The lucky Girl Scout attendees got an advance screening of the season three premiere of the Netflix original series “Project Mc²,” created by MGA Entertainment and produced by Awesomeness TV.

“Project Mc²” works to inspire girls to embrace their passions for learning and exploring. With a diverse set of characters, including McKeyla (problem solver and leader), Adrienne (culinary chemist), Bryden (gadget guru), Camryn (engineer extraordinaire), Devon (artist & creative) and Ember (green thumb), the series shows that a girl can be anything.

The show’s cast (Mika Abdalle, Victoria Vida, Genneya Walton, Ysa Penarejo, Alyssa Lych, Belle Shouse) of girl-empowerment role models all attended the event, as well as female executives from Twitter, Instagram, Google, and Intel who have found success in S.T.E.A.M. careers. In addition to the screening, attendees got to hear about the careers of these real-life role models, participate in two of Project Mc² experiments (Volcano and Soda Can Robot) and walk away with their own S.T.E.A.M. swag from Project Mc².
