An Interview with Shadowhunters’ Katherine McNamara and Emeraude Toubia at NYCC 2016
We got the opportunity to sit down with Katherine McNamara (Clary) and Emeraude Toubia (Isabelle) at New York Comic-Con and talk about what’s coming up in Season 2 of Shadowhunters.
Clary’s entire world has been revolving around finding her mom so what happens now?
Kat: “What happens now is that Clary has to confront the fact that her mother lied to her for 18 years (laughs) and that the relationship of trust and respect that she thought she had with her mother is all a lie. She has to deal with that betrayal on top of the fact that her mother still sees her as a little girl. Her mother still sees her as this mundane that was sheltered. Clary’s out of that life now she’s a shadowhunter, she’s developing into this warrior and getting her mother to see that, getting her mother to see her growth and maturity is a huge challenge. It’s a huge challenge for her this season. But you know she has someone else to lean on that also has issues with her mother.”
Emeraude: “(laughs) But not for long!”
Kat: “That’s true we do fight! We fight this season more than just physically.”
Emeraude: “Yea, so that’s going to be exciting.”
Well that’s great because I feel like Isabelle (last season) was focusing on other people, so this season does she get to stand up for herself?
Emeraude: “She does a lot of solo stuff.”
Kat: “She does something for herself! I’ll tell you that much!”
Emeraude: “She goes down a dark path this time around. She’s starting to; it’s the same character, but she’s in a different place, so the circumstances make her act differently. It’s going to be exciting, it’s going to be dark, it’s going to be mature.”
Kat: “That’s what’s so great about this season…it’s darker, it’s grittier. We do have a sense of maturity, and we are straying very far from the books. Which is exciting because it allows us to take these characters, I mean we still stay with the tone and the spirit of the books and what they mean to people and the characters stay very true to themselves…but it allows us to throw these characters in situations that they wouldn’t have otherwise been in. It forces them out of their comfort zone, and it forces them to make very difficult choices.”
Are there any moments coming up next season that you can’t wait to see the fan reaction to?
Emeraude: “Oh so many! I can’t even pick one! Last season my stunt girl only did something once during the season, and this year she’s in every single episode. So you can just imagine how much more action you’re going to see in every single one of our fights and training scenes.”
Kat: “Yeah the show is a bit scary [this season], and it has a lot more violence than last season. I mean you guys saw it in the clip, we saw Jace getting the crap beat out of him, and it only builds from there. It’s very horror based; we have a lot of things that go into the realm of American Horror Story, and how dark and twisted it can get. But I think it’s something good. It only elevates our show in a great way.
If a demon were to attack you right now, who would you want by your side?
Kat: *immediately* “Dom!”
Emeraude: “I’m walking away! (laughs)”
Kat: “No! I’m sorry come back! I thought you meant other than this one?”
Emeraude: “(laughs) Yeah right! You all heard that!”
Kat: “In my defense…how often is Dom practicing kicks all the time?”
Emeraude: “Listen! Dom is not a better fighter than Isabelle in heels! (laughs)”
Kat: “I mean in heels yeah, I wouldn’t want to see Dom fight in heels, that would be a bad thing. (laughs)”
