Exclusive Interview with Hip Hop Group Oxymorrons

Having just released their debut EP Complex But Basic, alternative hip hop group Oxymorrons has already begun making a name for themselves. From music placements on ESPN’s First Take to a national tour with Astronautalis, the Oxymorrons sound has already made an impact.
The band took some time out of their schedule before the second leg of their tour with Astronautalis kicks off to discuss Complex But Basic and how they have crafted their own unique sound.
Oxymorrons have been known for the eclectic sound you have created. What influences do you feel have had the most impact on your overall style?
All of our surroundings, living in not only one of the most diverse cities in the world, but also living in the most diverse borough of that city have truly influenced our style, music, and approach to life.
With as many influences as you have incorporated, how would you describe Oxymorrons to someone who had never heard you?
The way we like to describe our sound is if Rage against the Machine was the backing band for Outkast.
You have grown quickly, getting attention from big name producers and playing large festivals. How have you managed to gain your current level of success this quickly?
We work really, really hard and try to do everything as genuine[ly] as possible.
Kami has said that there are stereotypes about music “based on what you look like.” What have you done to avoid these stereotypes?
There is no avoiding stereotypes. We try to overcome them by staying true to ourselves.
Your single “Asleep” has been getting quite a bit of attention ahead of Complex But Basic’s release. What do you think it is about this song that people have latched onto?
With everything going on in the world we would hope “Asleep” allows people to escape momentarily, sing along to the chorus, and have a good time.
What can fans expect from Complex But Basic?
A diverse musical experience that provides a glimpse into what we plan to do as a band.
Is there a track that you feel best represents you to new fans?
If we had to choose then “Freak Parade” It has a good mix of what we like to do musically.
What’s next for you guys after the release of Complex But Basic?
More touring and getting in the studio to work on new music.
Complex But Basic is available now. Check out Oxymorrons on tour with Astronautalis through November.
