Two New Comedy Series Premiere on HBO This Fall
“Divorce”
On October 9 (10:00 – 10:30 pm ET/PT) the new series “Divorce” premieres exclusively on HBO; heralding Sarah Jessica Parker’s triumphant return to the network that launched her! Also starring in the comedy series are Thomas Haden Church, Molly Shannon, Talia Balsam, Tracy Letts, Sterling Jerina and Charlie Kilgore.
After more than a decade of marriage and two children, Frances (Parker) has suddenly begun to reassess her life and her strained relationship with her husband. But she soon discovers that making a clean break and a fresh start is harder than she thought. Thus begins the story of a very, very long divorce, as the show follows Frances and Robert. We see them grapple with the fallout from their failing marriage, not just for themselves, but also for their children and friends, ranging from awkward public encounters to difficult private therapy sessions.
Serving as an executive producer, Sarah Jessica Parker (Emmy® and Golden Globe Award winner for HBO’s “Sex and the City”) also stars in the comedy series along with Thomas Haden Church (Oscar® nominee for “Sideways”) who stars as Robert, Frances’ husband, a man who is struggling to cope with their marriage falling apart.
Set in Westchester County, NY, “Divorce” is created by Sharon Horgan (“Catastrophe”), with Paul Simms (HBO’s “Girls”) serving as a showrunner on the series. Paul Simms, Sarah Jessica Parker, Sharon Horgan, Alison Benson and Aaron Kaplan executive produce.
“Divorce” also stars Molly Shannon (Emmy® nominee for HBO’s “Enlightened” and “Saturday Night Live”) as Diane, Frances’ high-strung friend, who has a successful husband, a beautiful house and no children; Talia Balsam (“Mad Men”) as Dallas, Frances’ close friend, who has been both widowed and divorced; Tracy Letts (“Homeland”) as Nick, Diane’s husband; Sterling Jerins (“World War Z”) as Lila, Frances’ and Robert’s daughter; and Charlie Kilgore (“Moonrise Kingdom”) as Tom, their son.
Circle October 9th on your calendars now, or put a reminder in your phone, you won’t want to miss this comedy.
“Insecure”
Modern-day black women are usually portrayed as strong, confident and “flawless.” But Issa and Molly are definitely not “killing it.” These best friends must deal with their own real-life flaws as they attempt to navigate different worlds and cope with an endless series of uncomfortable everyday experiences.
Created by Issa Rae and Larry Wilmore, the comedy series “Insecure” launches its eight-episode season Sunday October, 9 (10:30-11:00 p.m. ET/PT) immediately following “Divorce”, also exclusively on HBO. The show stars Rae as Issa and Yvonne Orji stars as Molly, while it explores the black female experience in an unclichéd and authentic way.
Over the course of the season, Issa tries to figure out what she wants out of life and how to take control of it, while fumbling her way through her journey. Molly, a corporate attorney who appears to have everything together professionally, struggles inside as she looks for external ways to fix her life.
Meanwhile, Issa’s boyfriend, Lawrence (Jay Ellis), who has fallen victim to complacency, is working to get his own act together and Frieda (Lisa Joyce), Issa’s overeager white co-worker, whose enthusiasm is both annoying and endearing, is found to be the crux of Issa’s racial frustrations at work.
Shot in and around South Los Angeles, “Insecure” incorporates the music of both indie and established artists of color, and touches on a variety of social and racial issues that relate to the contemporary black experience.
“Insecure” was created by Issa Rae and Larry Wilmore; executive produced by Issa Rae, Prentice Penny, Melina Matsoukas, Michael Rotenberg, Dave Becky and Jonathan Berry. Larry Wilmore serves as a consultant.
Actor and author, Issa Rae wrote the New York Times bestseller “The Misadventures of Awkward Black Girl,” which was published in 2015. Her web content has garnered more than 25 million views and over 200,000 subscribers on YouTube. In addition to making the Forbes 30 Under 30 list twice and winning the 2012 Shorty Award for Best Web Show for her hit series “Awkward Black Girl,” she has worked on web content for Pharrell Williams, Tracey Edmonds and numerous others.
