Sofia Carson Named Radio Disney’s NBT

She may be rotten to the core, but now Sofia Carson is also Radio Disney’s newest “NBT” (Next Big Thing).

This honor comes just days after the star’s first broadcast performance of her debut single, “Love Is the Name” on Disney Channel’s special, the 2016 Radio Disney Music Awards.

Signed to Hollywood Records and Republic Records, the 23-year-old released “Love Is the Name” in early April. The song is a rhythmic pop number, inspired by the international hit “Live is Life” by Opus. Carson also recorded a version of the song featuring Latin Grammy Award-winner J Balvin.

Radio Disney’s “NBT” program, first launched in 2008, started as a contest for unsigned and unknown artists. In 2013, Radio Disney started a new format for NBT; instead of multiple contestants there was a single “featured artist.” Carson will be featured in a series of videos, tracking the journey of launching her music career. These videos will be presented nationally on Radio Disney, Disney Channel, the Radio Disney app, RadioDisney.com and social media platforms.

Carson is in good company, with past “NBT” artists including Fifth Harmony (Epic Records), Shawn Mendes (Island Records), Kelsea Ballerini (Black River Entertainment), Bea Miller (Hollywood Records) and Becky G (Kemosabe/RCA Records).

Best known for starring as Evie in the Disney Channel Original Movie “Descendants,” Carson is no stranger to singing. She recorded her own rendition of the movie’s hit “Rotten to the Core” for the soundtrack. This version has been viewed more than 61 million times on YouTube.

Carson was born and raised in Miami, Florida, before moving to California to study at the University of California, Los Angeles. She has trained in vocal performance and dance since the age of three, and has received national accolades for her talents.

The year is just getting started for Carson. She is also starring alongside Sabrina Carpenter in the upcoming Disney Channel Original Movie “Adventures In Babysitting,” a contemporary re-imagining of the hugely popular 1980s blockbuster of the same name. The movie is set to premiere Friday, June 24 (8:00 p.m. EDT) on Disney Channel, following a DCOM mega-marathon. She will also appear in the upcoming worldwide release of “Tini: El Gran Cambio de Violetta.”
