Charli XCX Announces New Label and New EP

The singer behind “The Fault in Our Stars” hit “Boom Clap” recently announced that she’s establishing her own record label!
Charlotte Aitchison, better known as Charli XCX, is in the process of becoming a label manager. Vroom Vroom Recordings, as it’s titled, is a subsidiary label of Atlantic Records UK, as well as Charli’s venture to explore the results of combining bubblegum pop with something a little more sinister. The first EP from the label, titled Vroom Vroom EP, is set to drop this Friday, February 26th! And to share her excitement with the public, the singer has released two of her current favorite songs from the artists RIVRS and CuckooLander, who are also featured on the EP!
When prompted about the Vroom Vroom EP, Charli replied, “I’ve worked with SOPHIE on the new EP, and what we create together speaks for itself. Sometimes we get aggressive, sometimes we get beautiful; he pushed me, and I push him. I’m making beautiful party songs right now, and this is just the start. The album goes to other places, and I can’t wait for people to hear it. I feel the most creative I have in a long time, and I couldn’t be more excited for the next chapter.”
The Vroom Vroom EP had its beginnings in Stockholm last year, after some of Charli’s other career ventures, including the release of her second album SUCKER, writing Selena Gomez’s “Same Old Love,” and winning awards from Billboard and Sesac. Together with SOPHIE, Charli XCX worked diligently on the first release of her label, and following the end of recording, she released “Vroom Vroom,” her single from the upcoming album, at the close of 2015.
And, as mentioned before, Charli has released two singles via Vroom Vroom Recordings: “Beating Myself Up,” by CuckooLander, and “Friend/Lover,” by RIVRS. Professionally known as CuckooLander, Holly Hardy is a woman who does it all. She’s a multi-instrumentalist, singer, songwriter, and she even released her own self-titled album in 2015! Not to mention, she’s performed at the British Summer Time festival; she co-wrote “Kingdom” with Simon Le Bon of Duran Duran, Rosam Batmanglij of Vampire Weekend, and Charli for the “Hunger Games” soundtrack; and she’s been offered to support both Charli and The Libertines on their tours.
Consisting of Charlotte Mallory on vocals, and Fin Munro on the keys and multiple other instruments, RIVRS put their minds and their synths together to make some interesting pop music. They’ve worked with Hannah Marshall on their video for their song “Friend/Lover,” as well as Kitsuné Records to release their latest track “Last Love,” they’re currently working with Mark Ralph of Hot Chip, and Years and Years, on their anticipated debut album.
Charli has much esteem for both artists, stating, “The artists coming up through it [Vroom Vroom Recordings] will be sharp, potent, deadly, and, ultimately, will leave their mark on pop music. RIVRS and CuckooLander are two artists who have so much intelligence, pop sensibility, and potential–they know what they want, and both have great vision. That inspires me, and it’s why I want to work with them.”
Along with the good news of the Vroom Vroom EP, and her record label, Charli has also divulged that she’ll be hosting her own Beats 1 radio show beginning Friday, February 26th at 8 pm UK time; during this show, her track “Trophy” off of the upcoming EP will premiere. What’s more, she’ll have a DJ set at Ace Hotel in London on March 11th, and will be playing the March 17th and 18th shows with SOPHIE on South by Southwest. Following this, both artists will be at the Hype Hotel, headlining the Gorilla VS Bear X Hype Machine showcase. And, lastly, Charli plans to release her third studio album later this year. 2016’s busy for Charli XCX, and just writing about it makes me tired!
