Archie Comics Is Coming to The CW!

America’s favorite perpetual teens from Riverdale High are getting a live action makeover. Just in time for the comic books 75th anniversary, The CW has officially ordered a pilot for Riverdale which will based on the characters in the Archie comics.
According to a press release on Archie Comics’ official site, Riverdale promises to have Archie and his friends confront “the darkness and weirdness bubbling beneath Riverdale’s wholesome facade”. The one-hour drama will be a “dark and twisty” 21st Century reboot on the town of Riverdale and its teen residents Archie, Betty, Veronica, Jughead, Reggie, as well as Josie and the Pussycats (Sold!). I am holding out hope Sabrina the Teenage Witch will make an appearance as well (Can someone call Melissa Joan Hart to see if she is still available?) .
The show will also focus on more diverse characters than previously seen in the comic. Kevin Keller, the comics’ first openly gay character, has already been confirmed to have a “major” presence on the show. And, because it wouldn’t be the CW without ridiculously good-looking stars, Archie himself will be getting a makeover and become the hottie Betty and Veronica (and the red-headed vixen Cheryl Blossom) have clearly seen all these years. PLUS, Greg Berlanti (“Arrow”, “The Flash”, and “Supergirl”) will be manning the creative helm for this project so you KNOW it is going to be good.
Since 1941, Archie Comics has always been about what it’s like to be a teenager and empowering kids and adults to make positive choices. In keeping with The CW’s track record of bringing comics to life while protecting the comics history, it feels like a natural fit for Riverdale to find its home on The CW and continue bringing the comics message to an even larger fan base, just with a darker twist.
