Ten years ago, all Jamie Tworkowski wanted to do was to help his friend tell her story. When Jamie met Renee Yohe, she was struggling with addiction, depression, self-injury, and suicidal thoughts. He wrote about the five days he spent with her before she entered a treatment center and sold T-shirts to help cover the cost. When she entered treatment, he posted the story on Myspace titled, “To Write Love on Her Arms.” Here is the original story.
After posting the story, Jamie was flooded with emails and posts from around the world from people suffering through depression, addiction or self-injury. Others were mourning those they’d lost to such struggles and reaching out to ask what they could do to bring hope to their communities.  Jamie knew he had stumbled onto a conversation that couldn’t be ignored. In 2007, TWLOHA became an official nonprofit organization dedicated to presenting hope and finding help for people struggling with depression, addiction, self-injury, and suicide. TWLOHA exists to encourage, inform, inspire, and invest directly into treatment and recovery.
Since its inception, TWLOHA has donated over $1.5 million to aid with treatment and recovery; granted funding to 73 unique organizations and counseling practices; posted over 600 blog posts for support and encouragement; traveled over 3 million miles to visit individuals in their community; shipped merchandise to over 74 countries; and responded to over 180,000 individual messages.
This past September TWLOHA wrapped its 4th annual campaign titled, “We’ll See You Tomorrow”, to honor National Suicide Prevention Week and World Suicide Prevention Day. Nearly $83,000 was raised for treatment and counseling, and support was seen from numerous celebrities including actress Jessica Chastain, actor Jared Padalecki, and USA soccer star Alex Morgan.

Recently, TWLOHA  launched a month-long giving campaign named, ‘#into16’ , which exceeded its goal of raising $50,000 by December 31st by raising over $78,000 to help TWLOHA share a message of hope with more people than ever before. Thanks to the success this  campaign, TWLOHA will be able to expand their outreach and travel to even more locations. To follow their upcoming  events click here.

In the past ten years, TWLOHA has helped thousands of individuals by bringing hope, treatment, and awareness. Their upcoming celebration is a testament to not only how much they have accomplished in the past ten years, but a promise to all those that look to them for support of TWLOHA’s dedication to continue their work for many years to come.
