‘The 100’ and DC’s ‘Legends of Tomorrow’ Kick Off The CW’s Strongest Thursday Line-Up in Three Years

The CW has been transforming its programming and diversifying its targeted audience and explored genres for a few years now. Through these years, it has taken the emerging network quite a few trials and errors to put together strong line-ups throughout the week. While The CW’s Thursday night spot has been ruled by The Vampire Diaries since its premiere in 2009 (recently joined by its spin-off The Originals), the network finally switched up its Thursdays by putting the newest DC production Legends of Tomorrow followed by the returning post-apocalyptic drama The 100 in the line-up instead.
The move was hardly surprising considering the decline in overall Thursday ratings for The CW in the past few seasons, but it was still a bold move to switch up a years old veteran show’s signature spot. However, after the successful series premiere of Legends of Tomorrow followed by a triumphant return of the third season of The 100, it seems that the CW made a wise choice indeed.
While the two shows might seem drastically different on the surface, they seem to pair up well as reflected in the ratings. Legends of Tomorrow’s premiere earned a 1.2 rating in the 18-49 adults demo with a total viewership of 3.14 million. The 100‘s season premiere delivered a 0.7 rating in the 18-49 demo with a total viewership of 1.98 million,. The two time-slots combined gave The CW it’s most-watched Thursday night in over three years.
The CW seems to have found its footing in the Thursday line-up. But the real question is whether this line-up and these shows can retain their premiere numbers in the upcoming weeks, especially when the ratings giant, ABC’s ‘TGIT’ Shondaland line-up, returns in February.
