Pinegrove Premiers “Old Friends” From Upcoming Album

The last few years have seen the indie rock world embrace the drawl of American roots music. While bands like Mumford and Sons, the Lumineers, and the Avett Brothers have been all over the radio with their blend of folk and rock, New Jersey band Pinegrove has approached a love for the twang with a more rock-oriented and significantly rawer feel. Their latest single, “Old Friends,” from their upcoming album Cardinal is the perfect illustration of this.
After five years of differing lineups, Pinegrove signed to Run For Cover records last year and released their debut LP, Everything So Far. Carrying over the opening track from this album, “New Friends” to Cardinal, the band has crafted a companion song in “Old Friends” that focuses less on new relationships and spends more time dwelling on the past. Songwriter Evan Stephens Hall’s lyrical ambitions are evident in this new track and, like the previous albums, showcase his melodic cutting wit.
Cardinal will be released February 12 and is available for preorder now. “Old Friends” can be heard via Stereogum. A spring tour will be announced soon. Until then, they can be heard on select dates in the Northeast.
