Cover Wars: I Know What You Did Last Summer

“I Know What You Did Last Summer” is a collaboration from teen heart-throb Shawn Mendes and Camila Cabello of pop girl group Fifth Harmony. The song is the lead single from Shawn’s Handwritten Revisited album and was released in November of 2015. The song was written backstage on Taylor Swift’s 1989 World Tour where Shawn was Taylor’s opening act and Fifth Harmony was Taylor’s guest performer for that night’s show. 11 hours in the studio later “I Know What You Did Last Summer” became more than just a backstage jam session. It was a pop hit for Shawn and Camila.

The song peaked on the Billboard Hot 100 at 22, making it Shawn’s third top 25 song. The music video was released two days after the song dropped and features Shawn and Camila weathering a snowstorm, windstorm, sandstorm, and rainstorm as they battle to repair their relationship. Shawn and Camila performed the song on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, The Late Late Show with James Corden, Live with Kelly and Michael, and the 2016 People’s Choice Awards.

If I didn’t love Shawn Mendes and Camila Cabello enough already, I love them even more now. I love how their voices compliment each other so well, and let’s be honest this song is a downright jam, it is unbelievably catchy and so much fun to rock out to. “I Know What You Did Last Summer” has been the first song on my shower playlist for over a month now, and that rarely happens. I don’t see it changing for a while.
