Cover Wars: All I Want for Christmas is You

Mariah Carey

“All I Want for Christmas is You” was co-written and produced by Mariah Carey. The song was the first single released from Mariah’s first holiday album, Merry Christmas in 1994. The song was re-recorded and released in 2010 for Mariah’s  second Christmas album, Merry Christmas II.

A special version of “All I Want for Christmas is You” was recorded featuring Justin Bieber for his 2011 Christmas album, Under the Mistletoe.

In the 21 years following the song’s release it has been covered from artists ranging from Michael Bublé to Fifth Harmony and everyone in between. “All I Want for Christmas is You” is critically lauded and is considered a Christmas classic by many. In 2010 The Daily Telegraph reported the song being the most popular and most played Christmas song of the past decade in the United Kingdom. The song was also ranked Number 4 on Rolling Stone’s Greatest Rock and Roll Christmas Songs list.

As of 2013 “All I Want for Christmas is You” reportedly reached $50 million dollars in royalties and that number continues to grow. Mariah also released a children’s book based on the song in November of 2015.

This is by far one of my favorite modern Christmas songs, I can listen to it a hundred times over and I will still dance around to it. It has definitely become a Christmas classic and I don’t see it fading anyway anytime soon. In honor of it being officially two weeks until Christmas, I decided to pick my Top 4 covers of “All I Want for Christmas is You” by Mariah Carey, vote for your favorite below!
