Exclusive Interview with Jax Malcolm

After guest starring on a number of shows, including Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, and filming a feature called The Other Side of the Door that’s due out next year, Jax Malcolm is taking a break from acting and modeling. Instead, he’s taken some time to get into the holiday music scene to raise money and awareness for The Children’s Hospital of Los Angeles.
This week he took some time out to talk to us and let us know a little bit more about his album, his acting, and why The Children’s Hospital of Los Angeles is so important to him.
Hi, Jax. How are you?
“I’m really good. How are you?”
I’m good. Ten days until Christmas! Are you excited?
“So excited.”
Did that have anything to do with you deciding to do a Christmas album?
“Yes. I actually just love Christmas.”
How long did it take you to make?
“Three days in the studio.”
Oh wow!
“And eight months getting it ready. (Laughs).”
Ok, so three days, eight months…how many tracks are there?
“Five.”
I know there are some that are covers and some that are original. Did you write the original stuff or did somebody help you?
“No. My wonderful producer wrote them for me.”
Did you have any input on them?
“Not really. She’s my vocal teacher.”
From what I saw, you’re going to be giving some of the money you earn from the album to the Children’s Hospital of LA?
“I’m going to donate some of the proceeds to them.”
Can you tell me why the Children’s Hospital means so much to you?
“I’m a Jr. Ambassador and when I was a baby I had two kidney surgeries there.”
What does it mean to be a Jr. Ambassador?
“I raise money and I help when I volunteer.”
Do you ever get to go visit the kids or do you mostly make people aware of what they need?
“I don’t get to visit right now because it’s flu season and we don’t want to get any of the kids sick.”
Is there anything that you’d like to tell other kids like you who have maybe been helped by a hospital and might want to give back?
“It’s really important to give back and get involved with charities and hospitals. It doesn’t matter which one.”
Are there any other charities that you’re involved with?
“The Children’s Hospital is my main focus right now.”
That’s a good focus to have.
“Yep!”
You’ve got a movie coming out soon, too, right?
“Yes. In February I’m going to be in a new horror movie coming out called The Other Side of the Door and I’m going to be the voice of the ghost.”
You get to be a ghost! How fun was that?
“It was a lot of fun, making all the noises and stuff.”
You said it’s a horror movie?
“Yes, it is.”
Is there anything else you can tell us about it?
“There’s a car crash and the mom wants to see the kid again and she makes a big mistake and the kid comes back to help her.”
Ohhh. That kind of sounds creepy.
“It is.”
But so much fun to do, huh?
“Yes, it was a lot of fun being in the booth.”
And I know I saw you in an episode of Crazy Ex-Girlfriend. How was that?
“It was a lot of fun. The whole entire time we were dancing around, laughing, and just having a great time.”
That is awesome! Is there anything else you have coming up that we should know about?
“I was just recently in the season finale of The League and I was the role of Chalupa Batman.”
Our website is called Talk Nerdy With Us. Are there any ways that you are nerdy?
“I love super heroes and I know a lot about super heroes.”
Who are your favorite super heroes?
“My favorite super heroes are Aqualad and Beast Boy. They both have water type super powers. Beast Boy can turn into water creatures and then he can also tame the creatures and Aqualad can manipulate water and talk to the sea creatures. And another reason I love the water so much is that I’m a Jr. Lifeguard.”
Ohhh. How did you become a Jr Lifeguard?
“Every summer, me and my friends go to the beach and go to this summer program called Jr Lifeguard and I talked to my mom about it and she said, ‘All right, we can do it.’ So I wake up early in the morning, head on over to the bus stop, and I go all the way over to Will Rogers State Beach and I do pier runs, kneeboarding, surfing, and a bunch of other fun stuff.”
Wow! So with being a Jr Lifeguard, have you gotten to save anybody’s life?
“Uh, no. We just learned how to do it.”
Ok. Well, that’s a good thing to know.
“Yes, it is.”
When you’re not at the beach hanging out and doing all that stuff you were just talking about, what else do you like to do?
“Um, I’m also a competitive Jr Olympic swimmer.”
Wow! Have you won any medals or anything?
“Uh, yes, I’ve won a lot of medals.”
