Gilmore Girls Lorelai and Rory: For the Love of Coffee

With the return of Gilmore Girls to Netflix, I thought I’d put an end to the debate regarding the many loves of Lorelai and Rory.

Sure, Rory had deep feelings for her three guys: Dean, Jess and Logan. And yes, maybe Lorelai and Luke belonged together.  But none of these gentlemen could compete with the greatest love of Rory and Lorelai’s life, Joe.

Joe, who the heck is that?  You may be asking. If you let me continue, it’ll become clearer. Joe as in Cup of Joe also known as Java.

Yes, the greatest love of the Gilmore Girls life is coffee. Throughout the series run, it was evident how much coffee meant to them. They began their day at Luke’s indulging in their passion for the brew.  When Luke ran out of coffee, Lorelai and Rory would panic. Both Lane and Dean often waited at the Chilton bus stop, with coffee in hand, to give to Rory.f72f0e62dd9c199d44169c98962f584b

During the dance marathon, Luke made sure that he had an ample supply of their favorite beverage. Coffee was Lorelai and Rory’s Energizer Bunny, it kept them going and going and going.

Lorelai and Rory have made many relationship mistakes, was it due to too much caffeine to the brain clouding their judgment?

But the biggest question is, why did the Gilmore Girls love coffee so much?  And second, how did Lorelai’s coffee addiction start? It’s doubtful that Emily Gilmore served it to her. Emily was more of a tea on the sun porch type of lady. At least we know Lorelai probably passed her coffee love to her daughter.

The great Gilmore Girls coffee love is a mystery that will never be answered. But does it matter? My suggestion is to watch the return of Gilmore Girls while drinking your favorite beverage. Coffee perhaps?

  1. I forget which episode it is in, but when Richard goes to basically follow around Lorelai for a day after Emily begs her to take him off her hands when he retires, there is a scene where Richard comments on how many cups of coffee Emily has had that day. They later do a call back to this when he repeats the same message to Lorelai.
