Jane the Virgin: An Examination of the Villanueva Women

With the season two premiere of Jane the Virgin fast approaching, let’s take a look at three characters who have had a great impact on the show: Alba, Xiomara and Jane Villanueva.

The Villanueva women are the cornerstone of Jane the Virgin. Since they represent different generations and experiences, Alba, Xiomara and Jane connect with audiences reaching several demographics.

Alba is the matriarch, a woman who left her home to make a better life for her family. She doesn’t speak English but that doesn’t stop her from effectively communicating. With the help of subtitles, viewers can read her words. Talented actress Ivonne Coll, who plays Alba, can convey the character’s emotions with one look.

Andrea Navedo, who plays Xiomara (known as Xo) is a woman who became a mother at a young age.  Along with being smart and attractive, she has shown that you can still be a good mother without losing your identity and giving up on your dreams.

The youngest Villanueva woman, Jane (Golden Globe Award Winner Gina Rodriguez) is funny and spunky. She didn’t let mistakenly becoming impregnated in a medical mishap deter her from her heart’s desire. She is determined to have a career as a writer.  Viewers believe she will achieve her goals.

These three women are positive role models for all women, not just the Latina community.

The Jane the Virgin season premiere airs Monday, October 12 at 9/8c on The CW.
