Crazy Ex-Girlfriend: It’s My Party, and I’ll Obsess If I Want to

Spoiler alert:  This article contains Information from the episode “I Hope Josh Comes To My Party” which may not have aired yet in some regions.

More viewers should be watching Crazy Ex-Girlfriend and not just because it’s an awesome musical comedy. The major reason viewers should tune is because there’s a little Rebecca Bunch in all of us.  Yes, most of us haven’t given up a great apartment and job to travel across the country to follow an old boyfriend. But, the majority of us have experienced personal lost that scarred us and fed our insecurities, effecting decisions we have made.

For Rebecca, it was the abandonment she felt after her father left during a party she had as an adolescent in which only three people attended. This incident from childhood caused Rebecca to feel unloved and also made her all but break out in hives when it came to throwing parties. With the support of Paula (everyone needs a friend like this), Rebecca gets up the courage to throw a party.  The problem? She doesn’t have any friends, therefore, the guest list is pretty small.

Great musical numbers highlight Rebecca’s party quest, from Paula’s “Face Your Fear” performed beautifully by Donne Lynne Champlin to the “I Definitely Have Friends” rendition with Rachel Bloom and young Rebecca, Ava Acres. The party could have turned out to be the disaster Rebecca feared, if not for Josh. He is sensitive and caring, making it really easy to see why Rebecca feels as she does.

In Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, viewers are taught to believe that they can overcome their insecurities and grow stronger by accepting them, thanks to Rebecca.

Crazy Ex-Girlfriend airs Mondays at 8/7c on The CW.
