Why The CW Needs to Laugh More

When The CW network launched in 2006, it shared a lot in common with ABC Family. Excluding Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Angel and Charmed, the network’s trademark was young, hip programming like One Tree Hill, Dawson’s Creek,  Gossip Girl and Gilmore Girls.

Fast forward to the present, The CW seems to have become the action adventure/sci fi channel with shows like The Flash, Arrow, iZombie, Supernatural, The Originals, The Vampire Diaries, The 100 and Beauty and The Beast becoming their hallmark.

Jane the Virgin opened the door to another untapped genre: comedy. The critically acclaimed and award nominated series about a pregnant virgin has shown viewers that The CW can be funny.

Significant Mother created by Richard Keith and Erin Cardillo has further cemented The CW as a network that knows how to make audiences laugh. This fall, Jane the Virgin will be paired with new comedy, Crazy Ex-Girlfriend on Monday nights

The CW should explore adding more comedies to its lineup in the future.  In a world of uncertainty, sometimes the cure to what ails is laughter.
