Ladies and Gentlemen, meet your new favourite fantasy book!
I was sent a copy of Nymphs to review for my blog by Headline Publishing Group and over the past few days, I have not been able to put it down. Nymphs hits stores today and to celebrate I’ve compiled a list of reasons why you need to go get yourself a copy right now to ensure that you don’t miss out on all the mythological madness.

A young man is found dead after a college party in a small town. His body bears the marks of a brutal attack, but police are mystified as to the actual cause of death.
Afterwards, student Didi Tiensuu is approached by two mysterious women. Beautiful and other-wordly, they have come to warn her she is in danger. And to live, she must forever leave her other life behind.
There are evil forces at work that mere mortals can never comprehend. And Didi is about to discover her past is a lie. The night of reckoning is coming and the choice is hers. Reject her fate. Or accept her destiny and embrace her power.
Nymphs is based on a Finnish fantasy-drama television series titled Nymfit, before being adapted into a book series by the show’s concept creator, Miiko Oikkonen, and author Sari Luhtanen.
- 1. Greek mythology meets modern day Helsinki
What more could you possibly want? Adapted from the television series, Miikko Oikkonen’s concept is effortlessly brought to life on paper by Sari Luhtanen. Every character and location is so distinct due to the impeccable writing. With a whole host of mythological beings running around the Finnish capital, you know that chaos is bound to happen.
- 2. Sisters are doin’ it for themselves
Nymphs is littered with some of the most awesome female characters. Our main trio is comprised of Kati, Nadia and Didi. Kati, the oldest nymph, is naturally the bossiest. Initially quite standoffish, she slowly becomes less hostile towards the end of the novel. But don’t get it twisted, she’s the definitely the fiercest of three and will break your neck. Nadia is the polar opposite and while she may be just a water nymph, she is still as invaluable as her kickass counterpart in a fight. After all, she can heal you if you get injured. Now we have Didi. Recently joining the covey, Didi is certainly a firecracker. She may make some stupid and rash decisions, but Nadia and Kati are always there to save her if she gets into a sticky situation. Throughout the novel there’s a lovely sense of sisterhood between the nymphs whether they’re defeating the bad guys or trying to get Didi a date.
- 3. Samuel Koski
While at times you’ll get frustrated with Samuel, he’ll easily be your favourite character. Here to provide the comedic relief, he’s the Simon Lewis/Ron Weasley of the Nymphs world. Working in the medical profession, Samuel has known our protagonist, Didi, since they were children and finding out that your best friend (and the girl you’ve secretly been in love with for years) is a supposedly mythological creature can be hard. (#FictionalWorldProblems, am I right?) But don’t rule Samuel out as a dumb love interest just yet because, much like Didi, Samuel’s got a mysterious and mythical past of his own.
- 4. Swoonworthy Satyrs
This book isn’t short of devilishly handsome and charming male characters. From the villainous Erik to Nadia’s squeeze Jesper, you’re sure to fall in love somewhere along the way. Alas, satyrs are the bad guys. I mean, they’ve been persecuting nymph-kind for centuries, so they’re not be trusted…or are they?
- 5. These violent delights have violent ends
Or as Jesper so aptly put it, “The most likely scenario is that this story of ours is going to come to a sad ending”. Oh, he couldn’t have been more right. Nymphs is jammed pack with Romeo and Juliet-esque couples. While you may roll your eyes at how cliche the I-love-you-but-I-can’t-be-with-you romances are, I guarantee that you’ll gradually begin to root for these characters and will shed tears at some of their tragic demises. The shock factor is almost on Game of Thrones level, as is trying to decipher who’s who from all the Finnish names. (Don’t fret, there’s a page at the start that you can refer to along the way which nicely slots all of the characters into appropriate categories accompanied by a brief description!)
