Interview with Scream’s Carlson Young

Carlson Young is one of MTV’s freshest faces. You may recognize her from those hilarious Key and Peele skits we all love, or if you remember an old personal Disney Channel favorite of mine, As the Bell Rings. Carlson is now growing to become extremely popular on MTV’s newest hit summer show “Scream” which brought in six million total viewers on the night it premiered. I got a chance to chat with Carlson and ask her a few questions. Here’s what she had to say.

Were you a fan of the original Scream franchise?

“Yes! Huge fan. I was incredibly excited to even get the audition for the series.”

What were your favorite parts of the original series?

“I was always drawn to the meta-scape that Scream embraces. When I saw the movies at about 12 or 13, I was immediately drawn to that. Scream has a really unique voice in the horror genre. I, of course, love Tatum and her garage scene.”

Creating work off of something that’s already been so popular before can be hard. The pilot reached millions of views and got really great reviews but were you scared going into it that it wouldn’t live up to expectations?

“Yes, it’s kind of daunting to take on something so iconic, but this cast is so amazing and talented. Our show runners, MTV, and the Weinstein’s all have a solid grasp on Scream in 2015 and everything that that might entail. When you think about it, there is so much that we have to work with in this day and age technologically, and our characters and story line really indulge in that. Our killer has the potential to be uniquely sophisticated and tech savvy, which I think is really terrifying. So yes, it’s a lot of pressure taking Scream on, but I think it’s more exciting than intimidating.”

From what we’ve seen so far Brooke already seems like such an interesting character, with a secretive side (her relationship with Seth), what drew you to this role?

“Brooke is really layered. She’s got a lot going on in her life. I think I was drawn to that secret side of her, and I thought I could hopefully do something interesting and make her more than a stereotype.”

 Did you originally audition for Brooke or did you have other characters in mind?        

“Yes, I originally auditioned for Brooke.”

Do you think you have anything in common with Brooke or do you think you’re polar opposites?

“We’re polar opposites in most ways, but that doesn’t mean I don’t understand her. I think there’s a part of me that understands why she is the way she is and what makes her tick.”

 I see you and the rest of the cast extremely active on Twitter with the fans; do you enjoy interacting with them?            

“Yes, I think it’s nice! We’re just excited people are liking the show. It’s so cool to go on Twitter and see what everyone’s thoughts are on the episodes and characters.”

If you and the cast were actually in a situation like your characters on the show, who do you think would last the longest?              

“Ah! I don’t know! I honestly think after all this practice on the show, all of us could last pretty long.”

The main question the viewers want answered at the end of each week is “who is the killer?” Do you know who the killer is as of right now or are you still filming and finding out for yourself?

“I can’t tell you anything even if I wanted to! But I will say that we, as a cast, point lots of fingers week to week after we get our scripts. Only time will tell.”

Lastly, because I have to, what’s your favorite scary movie?        

“The Shining and The Silence of the Lambs are my absolute favorites.”
