'DADS' – A new kind of family comedy
When I first read that DADS was a transmedia production I admit I had no idea what that was. I still don’t, not really. I do, however, know that DADS is something you have never seen before and I have no idea if that is a good thing or a bad thing. DADS stars Patrick Gilmore (Cabin in the Woods) as Tim a stay at home dad who is stuck in a creative black hole; David Jame Lewis (Harper’s Island) as the single father of twins who is trying unsuccessfully to make it as an actor; Sean Amsing (Stargate, Psych) a stay at home rapper with a little girl who has a penchant for throwing up (that one scene in the pilot still has me feeling slightly nauseous); and last but not least Matty Granger (The Granger Brothers) a single guy who hasn’t matured past the frat boy stage.
DADS is looking to be a completely new kind of experience for today’s tech savy viewer by having apps that will allow for the viewer to find the nearest places to drink a beer, take their kid to the park, and even participate in the series by creating story content through sharing and the casting of a new character.
I freely admit that when I went in to this thing I prejudged the show to be something not worth watching. That it was going to be a train wreck and it was. Albeit a can’t look away from train wreck. Imagine if you will Full House on crack. Except of course they don’t all live together and you know they’re not lame. DADS isn’t for everyone and it’s not intended to be. It isn’t trying to be cute or relevant to mass audiences. What it is trying to be and succeeds by leaps and bounds is funny. I saw the half-pilot today for the 3rd time and found myself laughing at stuff I hadn’t noticed the first 2 times.
If you have a skittish gag reflex I wouldn’t recommend watching this web series created by Adam O.Thomas & Siobhan McCarthy. However if the vision of a little girl power puking, exploding diapers, and 30 year old men bedding 50 year old women doesn’t make you want to run for the bathroom then I would highly recommend giving this series a shot.
